Our little Berry, aged 3, suddenly came down with chest infection yesterday morning. (didn't come for her food so straight to vet) Vet gave diuretic & ab injection, and take home ab's which started this morning. They said it may take a couple of doses before improvement, would you agree? Having to syringe feed, eating very little herself, except having bought a £9 bag of Alfalfa King she sat on my knee and chewed hay for about 20 mins after her pellet feed. I have a wonderful vet but have never nursed thro a chest infection before, as one of our other piggies who had a chest infection died 6 hours after diagnosis. They did say if she got worse to go straight back to change ab's. She is on Baytril.

It is normal for it to take a couple of days for the antibiotics to kick in. Did they give you any diuretics to give at home? Also if she is snotty Bisolvon may help clear her airways. You could also out a bowl of steaming water next to her cage with a drop of Olbas oil in.

If she is on Baytril I would also give probiotics a couple of hours after each dose if possible.

Thanks, yes she has had diuretic yesterday and another since this post, I went for out of hours appt as she had also somehow twisted her leg so needed a painkiller. On baytril for now, and just got some critical care as fed up mashing pellets. Vet is hopeful her chest is slightly better than yesterday.
