I have just got avipro plus for my piggy who is on antibiotics. I have read to give it 1-2 hrs after the antibiotic, but I am not sure how much. I think I would rather syringe with water, then on food, just to ensure he is getting enough. The tub says 1 scoop per 100ml, but is that the same for piggys as for dogs? He is on antibiotics twice a day, so I would need to give the probiotic twice too.:stu::help:

I just sprinkle a teeny bit into my piggy's water then syringe her it (Like the tip of a teaspoon amount) I also sprinkle a teeny bity on the other's cucumber, they eat it quite happily :) You only need to do it once a day, I would do it an hour after the last antibiotic, or inbetween the 2 doses each day :)

You can dissolve avipro in a bit of water and syringe. I do this since several of piggies will eat carefully around the areas that have the probiotic sticking to them... :mal:

I have located Pro C probiotic which you can get at PetsatHome.

Has anyone got any experience of whether this is OK or not as unable to wait for online purchase as on antibiotic from today.

I use proC probiotic, works fine, Frank always has it in his water thus I don't have to syringe it to him :)

Brilliant - thanks a lot. I am off to Pets at Home to get some.

I have mixed up some Oxbow critical care to ensure he gets full nutrients. He is eating it off a spoon! He loves it. At least I will not have problems getting him his nutrients. Just hope Baytril does not cause him problems.

He should be fine, I didn't know about the pro-biotic when Frank first had antibiotics and he was okay, obviously I know now he needs it so it's always in his water :) just keep an eye on him/her :)

What's yours having the critical care for?

I want to make sure he has all the vitamins and minerals to help boost his immune system whilst he is being treated for his UTI. The fact that he loves it and is eating off a spoon, means it is not of any problem to him - it is not having to be syringed into him. Plus as it is a slurry, it will keep his fluid levels topped up - important in UTI. I am weighing him and making sure his weight remains steady.

I was going to get pro c from pets at home too, then I found that the local fish/reptile shop, 2 mins from me, sells the Avipro plus (recommended by Wiebke, thanks). How much should I give him, by syringe?, as don't want to over do it.

there's a page somewhere on this site that gives you the recommended dosage, i'll see if I can find it x

No that link doesn't help, @Wiebke will know, sorry I couldn't be much help!
I would just put it in the water, but everyone has different preferences :)

Caramel started on the Baytril last night, and is already slightly off his food/water/hay. He is still eating coriander, lettuce and grass. Is this ok, or should I already start on cc? Dont want to stress him needlessly, as already having the antibiotics, metacam, worming stuff, and the probiotics syringed (which he doesnt like being done). But then, I dont want him to shut down from not eating enough. He has had about a cup of veg today, but not seen him eat any pellets :(

Thing with the probiotic in the water is they love the taste, may encourage him to drink, try it if not, keep syringing.
Good hes had his veg, I'd mash the pellets up and syringe them.
Also metacam needs to be given with food, have you done that?
Other people know more than me, but that's what I've got for now until someone can advance x

He wont drink it in his water (he is a little fuss pot!). But he's not really drinking much since starting the Baytril anyway. Before the antibiotics, he was drinking loads, making me suspect a UTI even more. I hate giving the Baytril, as makes me feel that I am causing more harm then good :(. Asked vet for Septrim, but again they said they dont do it, and Baytril would be best anyway. I told him, I lost my other piggy last week who was on Baytril, but he said I was just basing my whole judgement on one guinea. I am so worried I am just repeating what happened with Peanut last week.

Have you seen if their are any other 'cavvy savvy' vets near you? I know of other people who have got second opinions and have been right to do so?

My guinea pig has been prescribed Baytril. How much is your guinea pig on? I was told to give 1ml every 24 hourse which seems a lot to me. I have looked at the doseage online and it says 2.5mg - 10mg/kg every 12 hours. As my guinea pig is 1.15 kg, at the top end which should be 23mg/day and the drug is 25 mg/ml. my guinea pig has been prescribed 25mg per day so is already over the doseage. I am thinking about a second opinion tomorrow as I am not happy at all with this.

Hi, my piggy is 1.18kg, and has been prescribed 0.4ml two times a day. It has definitely changed his appetite, but at least he is still eating. If you go for a second opinion, please let me know how you get on. If Caramel stops eating, my vet said to persevere with the antibiotics, although I am tempted to stop if this happens. Has your vet said what to do if this happens? As I hear it is quite common to stop eating whilst on Baytril, meaning syringe feeding would be needed. What does your piggy need the baytril for?

Jackjack1, sorry I have just seen your previous threads regarding your piggy's possible UTI, looks like we are in a very similar situation :(. I spent £140 at vets last night, and literally had to empty the last £s out of my purse, but I was just happy the x-ray was all clear. Now I am full of concern about the baytril. Caramel is at this moment drinking probiotic out of his water bottle, making me very happy! I am keeping a very close eye on him. Please please keep in touch, as I am struggling with what to do for the best, and maybe two heads are better than one!

It does look like we are going through the same thing. My vet told me to give the 1ml in one dose each day. I think this is a big dose for an antibiotic that does seem to have problems with eating. I have worked out that the maximum he should be given in one day is 0.92ml and I think this should have been in divided doses according to everyone who seems to be giving their guinea pig half this twice per day.

I think if he is going to hate the taste it is going to be harder to put 1ml in one go than in 2 doses 12 hours apart. I know that I am questioning the vet but she was quite young and they do not always know much about guinea pigs. I have not given him his first dose yet as I am deciding what is best for him. My Pharmacology degree gives me some knowledge of drugs and doseage levels and I am deciding whether to give him his dose in 2 doses over the 24 hours instead and make it 0.9ml which is the top end of the doseage level, but below what the vet said at 1ml.

Fluffy couldn't tolerate baytril, she lost her appetite and zest for life and septrin had no effect on her URI. She is on zithromax which she tolerates (so far). She has a drop of metacam which i give her on a basil leaf, bisolven a small pinch again on a basil leaf. She has avivro plus which i just sprinkle on her fresh food about 1/4 of a teaspoon and she hoovers it up so you dont always have to add it to water and some guineas can be tricked into taking medicine a bit like hiding tablets in pate for dogs, although she does look suspicious whenever i approach her wondering what i'm giving her next. Hope all your piggies make a full recovery.

It does seem strange giving all the baytril is one dosage, hopefully you will get some expert advice on here, as to whether this is sometimes normal :/ Its good that you have your degree to help guide you, I have struggled just understanding the dosage amounts. I have seen 3 different vets over the last two weeks (mainly with Peanut, who passed last week :(), and I dont really feel that any of them have had the knowledge that some of the people on here do.

I would split the baytril dose into two lots; guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism, so it will be more effective. Please syringe a pinch of probiotic dissolved in 1ml of water about 1-2 hours after you give the baytril. Ideally, you syringe half 1ml syringe (0.5ml) in one go; that is about a mouthful.

As to the recommendations about vet care, may I please remind those members urging the two members currently dealing with a potential UTI to see another vet that the veterinary care in neither case is wrong or inadequate and that there is no reason whatsoever in abandoning the current treatment unless there is a negative reaction to the baytril!

Sorry Fluffy is poorly too :( How long was she on Baytril for? Did you just take her off it? I have not heard of Zithromax, but I will bear that in mind, as my vets do not do Septrin. How long has she been on it now for? Caramel runs from me now when I go to his cage :( He is now due his next Baytril, and I have such a horrible feeling in my stomach :(

Zithromax is a very strong, last ditch antibiotic, which should be used only if a piggy's life is at stake.
There can be negative responses to baytril, but they are not all that common in my own long term experience with a number of guinea pigs. Please don't panic; the medical treatment your piggy is getting is perfectly OK! I've had several piggies with UTI that have recovered perfectly well on the course of treatment you are currently undergoing.

I would also ask any other members to PLEASE stop panicking inexperienced forum members with your own horror stories or calls to see another vet, and rather support them in a positive manner.
