So, one of my adopted boys seems to be gaining weight and we really don't feed him a lot, the other boy is maintaining his weight just fine, no gain or loss in his case. We're not in a place where we can take them out of their cage to let them run around, but will be moving later this month, and we'll likely be able to let them run around in a kid's wading pool during the day, also i just don't trust my current room mates cat or dog at all. So just how do you get a guinea pig to lose weight? Just curious if it's even possible. in all other regards he's healthy as he can be given the circumstances we're in at this moment. Any and all help is greatly greatly appreciated! :)

It is possible, but it's rarely necessary. Do you weigh the boys regularly? It's normal for pigs to gain weight up to the age of 15 months or so - how old are your boys?

The two steps for pigs who do need to "watch their weight" are:

1) Reduce dry feed. This is typically the fattening part of the diet and is the least important.

2) More exercise. This is usually best achieved by spreading the veggies around on the floor, and setting up what is basically a huge playground, full of toys to spark their interest and get them exploring!
