Hi!

So, there is a possibility that in a few months I will be moving from Mexico to the US. I have looked online and it seems to be okay to bring guinea pigs across the border...
I was just wondering, as I will be driving from Mexico to the US, is there anything in particular I should do? Specific travel cages? Good ways to bring vegetables? I will be in the car for 3 days, is that okay? Could it harm the guinea pigs health in anyway? Has anyone else traveled with guinea pigs? All advice is welcome! I'm also not going soon, so I have time to make and preparations.

Thanks!

I've never travelled that long with pigs but I imagine heat would be the biggest issue

Right, of course! They would be in an ACed car so they wouldnt be that hot! Plus I would add their water bottle, and monitor them throughout the car ride. So I dont think it would be to bad, but I'm not sure!

You can feed cucumber slices to hydrate them, just make sure they don't get too much, because it can give them runny poop. Just check you're ac is definitely gassed up and not about to run out. Guinea pigs do travel pretty well, have plenty of hay in with them too

I looked up border crossing info and it looks like common domestic rodents (including hamsters and guinea pigs are not restricted.) The only restriction is on rodents of African origin, even if they were not bred in Africa. Being South American, guinea pigs should be okay. I travel with my pigs (though not as long as you will be!) and they have always been okay, though they don't love the car. I would just say to try to bring them in as large a carrier or cage as you can fit, preferably one with bars or hard sides (to protect them should a bag fall or shove into the carrier), to make sure to provide them with food and water, or watery produce like cucumber to keep them hydrated, and to make sure they are not packed in too tight with luggage so they don't overheat and there is good air circulation.

I travel with Bill and Ted to the dental vet about 390 miles in one day, then back again the following day. They manage fine and sleep or eat most of the way. I use their 120 cm travel cage which is roomy and fits inside the car. I put a quilt under the cage to cushion it from bumps and place our luggage, their hay bag, fleeces and box of food stuffs all around the cage. We use a strap to secure the cage as we have to put the rear seat down. I put lots of veggies in a cool bag with freezey packs to keep it cool. We work on the premise that if we are comfortable heat wise then so are they. I would consider that not all overnight hotels will take piggies so make sure you research before you go. If you leave them overnight in the car once the sun has gone down when cooler you will have to be up before sunrise to monitor the heat inside the car, it can get very hot in the space of a few minutes with the slightest bit of sunshine, that would be my main worry. We always overnight them in a hotel, then we know they are fine.
Good luck with your journey, let us all know how you get along x
