My vet says he can't have xeno 50 until he is 16 weeks old, but he is scratching bad and really needs something now. I also want to rehome him and his dad asap, so what can i do? thanks
Oh dear I do hope your vet has got that wrong as I have just used xeno 50 on my 4 week old baby mice..... smallest weighing only 16 grams. I did that last Thursday and I have seen no ill effect at all. I did wait until 4 weeks and then it was out of desperation that I had to use it as they were all crawling with things (pet shop mouse... already pregnant,,, gave birth 5 days after I got her). They all seem fine.
Sometimes I think you need to weigh up the pros of giving treatment against the cons of delaying treatment and decide what is best for your animals.
I too have treated a baby, she was 6wks old at the time & teeny. I put one drop of ivomec on the baldy bit at the back of her ears & repeated 1wk later with a 3rd treatment orally 10 days after that
My vet gave me a little chart. See the pics. It says it is okay to use on birds and I imagine they are more fragile than guinea pigs. Anyway the dosage is weight related so you really need to weigh your pig and then refer to the chart. I know each of the little tubes has 15 drops in it. Hope this helps and I'm not stating the obvious....
I had this problem with my 3 week old babies, the vet wouldn't give xeno so I phoned Vedra at the CCT & she told me to use an anti paraite shampoo - I ordered the lice & easy from gorgeous guineas & it seemed to do the trick (I just did one shampoo instead of two). I don't think that my piggies had mange mites though so that might be why it worked out ok xx
Actually it just crossed my mind ..... it is Xeno 50 you have and not Xeno 450 right ?
If it is Xeno 450 (which is what the vet usually gives me for my guinea pigs) then the dosage is different as it is a much higher concentration of Ivermectin.
Just thought I would mention it as both names are so similar.
