Hey Guys,
Just looking for some assurances really. My boys will have been with us for 2 weeks on Sunday.
Last night for the first time EVER! Pacha finally ate a piece of kale from my hand! Which was amazing. And then he came and sat next to me in his cage and sat still while I stroked him. Amazing! I was honestly like a proud mama when he allowed me to do that.
However Pika our very scared little piggy has now taken to hiding under the fleece 😔 so far his not attempting to shred the puppy pads but I am starting to get really worried about him. I haven’t unnecessarily handled them, when I clean there cage twice a week, I remove the top of it and place the cat carrier inside and wait for the boys to go in it, and when I let them out of a night time for a few hours, I put a book on either side of the cage so they can just step outside into there run without me having to pick them up. I then go and sit quietly so I can supervise my boys without spooking them. So far Pika has never left the cage.
Am I doing this all wrong? Should I be forcing them to be handled to try and settle them? Should I switch to a different bedding for the time being? I really didn’t want to have to go down this route as I’m a single mother (I work full time but I’m studying for my diploma in accountancy so money isn’t tight exactly but I have to budget) and fleece really is a lot more cost effective for me. However if this is what it’ll take to help Pika then we will absolutely switch.
Please help, I only want what’s best for both of them but so far I really feel like I’m failing Pika.

@Pika&Pacha Pigs are prey animals so it's natural for them to hide.

How many hideys do you have in their cage? Pika may be going under the fleece as he can't find anything else to hide under.

Personally I don't force them if they don't seem comfortable with it. In time he will become less afraid but he may always be a skittish pig.

Piggies all have different personalities, so don't worry that they're behaving differently from each other. Burrowing under the fleece is also a personal preference in guinealand. My Bailey practically lived under the fleece until I made cage liners which are thicker, and he's not bothered since.
My only advice would be to make sure Pika isn't being bullied by Pacha, and that's the reason for hiding. It doesn't sound like that's a problem though from what you have said.
Pika obviously feels safer in his cage, so it's not a problem if he doesn't want to come out.
Keep persevering by being near them and hand feeding as much as you can (I used to give mine all their pellets by hand). When you have to pick him up, try using a hidey, and offer him treats to make it a good experience. Pika will come round a bit in time, but he might just be a shy little thing who's always skittish and happy to be in the background.
You're doing everything right, so hopefully things will move on eventually. Good luck x
