My Eliza has yet another eye poke mallethead although it isn't a bad one. I am just wondering if there are any over the counter human eye drops I could use instead of carting her off to the vets for the 5th time this year with the same problem?

Hello
I was advised to use Optrex eye drops with anti-biotics in it. This person boards guinea pigs and sells them and is very experienced.

Why don't you ask your vet if you could get some eye drops/gel for at home if it happens that frequently? Perhaps you want to revise your bedding, too?

I would be wary of using human meds on piggies on a regular basis. They should never be more than stop gap measure until a piggy can be seen by a vet.

I think it may also be the grass as they have been out on the grass today and some of it was quite long. There isn't an actual mark on the eye like there has been before so I have bathed the eye with clean warm water in case she had something in it.
They only have short chopped hay due to Eliza's clumsiness mallethead x

My guinea pig cleans the others'eye

One of my piggies tends to have a bit of a runny eye sometimes - I have used drops without much effect but his chum gives it a clean up every time he spots it starting again! Do you think he heals it in some way?
Thanks
I want to put some pictures and videos on here but don't know how, I'm using an iPad. Could someone explain.

It sounds rather like she has just something stuck in her eye then. A hay poke is an injury that goes right in the eye and can be quite serious; I would always have a proper hay poke seen by a vet.

Check whether there is something stuck under a lid. My Dizzy was a specialist for that!

If you wish, you can wash out her eye with saline solution. Boil 1 pint of water, let cool and stir in 1 tsp of salt. Then carefully wash the eye with a bit of cotton wool.

See a vet as soon as you notice any signs of cloudiness (ulceration/infection) in the eye.

If it was just a small piece of hay that got into the corner of the eye, I used to remove it carefully & put a couple of Brolene eyedrops in, as recommended by Peter Gurney http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/eyeinjuries.htm

However I would not attempt to remove the hay if it was poking right into the eye itself, if the eye becomes cloudy or crusty you need to seek a vet to check it out :)

Thank you for your replies. Eliza's eye is much better today after bathing in a saline solution. No more redness :) The last few times she has had a hay poke, there was a definite marking on the eye which was seen to by the vet :)
