Apart from obviously been sensible on the hygiene front are they any other complications that may occur?

Would the unborn child be at risk?

Not that i'm aware of. I thought it was only cat poo that was a risk to unborn babies.

Do you have some good news Fi? :)

I have just done a bit of googling and it said they don't pose a risk but if it worries you, get your OH to clean the cage etc.

My sis was told not to pick up her dog and cat's poo but that was about it.

Congrats BTW if it is you! ;)

Toxoplasmosis is primarily carried by cats although it can infect other warm blooded. The cat gets it by eating infected meat so as piggies are herbivores I'd say you are pretty safe.

I know that guinea pig urine (OK, Cashews) has traces of E-coli and other nasty bacteria in it (found while searching for something causing his illness) ... to be honest, I'm sure my waste isn't a paddling pool of joy so I wouldn't be too worried about what your pigs can pass to you.

Problems with bacteria only really exist if your immune system becomes compromised - in which case you'd be in hospital (JOY!) or if you decide to rub your hand in your pigs cage and then suck on it while watching Eastenders. You need large quantities to affect the kid and yourself and I doubt that'd happen unless you were being ridiculous. It's there. It'll be on your mind but it's hardly a threat. Get one of those hand-sanitiser squishy things if you're worried and don't let the cage get to the stage where it stinks of ammonia (which you shouldn't do anyway)

There was a report a while ago that piggies, hamsters etc often have salmonella traces, but that normal hand washing/hygiene deals with this (I guess in the same way that washing hands after handling raw meat etc does).

Fi, I did the same as usual with my piggies throughout the pregnancy, till the end when I looked and felt like the Michelin man, litter, cuddles, manicures, grooming, medicating, nursing etc (and feeding:))) and Oliver was born perfectly healthy.

If you are worried, talk to your GP who'll robably tell you to ask OH to do litter or wear gloves when you do it.
