Hysterectomy - Post Op Care & Lack Of Poops

Thanks Debbie, she has Avipro dissolved in some water & syringe fed with her food. I'm at a loss now as to what it could be :( I feel mean keeping her off veg yet again. We can have a poo sample sent off again but as you can imagine, after the cost of the ops recently my bank balance is nearly empty so I was hoping a few more days might sort things out. Should I stop syringe feeding her? She is eating hay & pellets & I can't understand why that doesn't firm things up.

:( sorry you're still going through this! I was hoping by now you'd have seen some progress.
Perhaps cutting down the syringe feed might help? You could try amping up her high calorie food instead for the weight gain?

Yes I am down to 2 lots a day now, I weighed her earlier & she was 1215g, after a feed she was 1255g :) She seems a lot better, her Metacam dose is right down now as well. Should I be just trying to maintain her weight now rather than trying to increase it to what it was? She was always a big piggy :)

She is still a very good weight and at the upper end of what any vet would like to see on the operating table! ;)

It can take several weeks after a major operation for a piggy to put weight back on, so be patient and don't worry as long as she is stable on her current level. Please just maintain the weight.

She is a good weight and I see no reason to continue with the syringe feeds. As long as her weight is stable I wouldn't worry about her going back to her previous weight. Weigh regularly and if it is a bit up and down that is fine, but if it is consistently going down, then that is the time to worry.

Thanks Debbie, I've decided today to just stop the feeds, I know she will lose some weight, maybe up to another 100g but she is a big piggy so it's not really a worry to be honest she could do with losing a little anyway, but it might have been the fact she had such a horrible infected womb that made her tummy big before. She is tucking into plenty of hay & some pellets, the amount of hay she is eating is pretty good & she is back on a small amount of veggies as well, as not giving them made no difference at all anyway :) As long as she is eating pretty normally (Which she is) I think I just need to let her start eating what she wants rather than worry about her weight loss :)
