By "a" are you meaning just one? Do you have any other guinea pigs? If you don't it may help you to know that they are social animals and thrive on the company of other piggies, human company isn't enough. It's not fair to keep a single piggie as they do get lonely so I would advise you to get at least 2.

Be warned they are very adictive to own! We started with two and now we have 9 of our own and 4 foster boys! As Donna said you are better getting a pair as they are much happier with companions, plus two pigs means double the entertainment for you! This site has a whole load of useful information. A good starting point would be the board that has details on housing and food so you can prepare in advance.

yeh, definitely get two! they will be so much happier and they way they talk and popcorn round together is so cute! x)

Hi!

It's great that you want to get a guinea pig; but please get two of the same gender (and make sure that they are right at the beginning depending where you get them from)! Guinea pigs live in groups and are not wired to be on their own for long stretches of time; it's like isolation prison for them.

It would be great if you could find out whether you have got a rescue in Kentucky.

You will need a cage that is at least 2x4 ft big for two guinea pigs, ideally bigger. Have a look for C&C cages in our housing section; they are often cheaper than the conventional cages and more flexible to suit everybody's space requirements. A conventional cage is better if you also have dogs or cats.

Hi! there is so much information out there on piggies i couldn't just write it all down.
visit www.guineapigcages.com
although it is primarily on the C&C cage (a great option!) it has other useful tips and information. As well as a forum. Although you can browse this forum here for some info.
Also look at the photos on that site as they will give you a visual idea of what you're wanting. There are also photos of our cages in the housing section.

As said before, it is good to get two! Though you will need more room if they are males.

you may also see lots of people using fleece blankets. this is a high maintenance bedding and takes a while to get used to. it doesn't always please everybody but i am about to start using fleece so we'll see how it goes. people often seem to ask which is the best bedding but you'll find it comes down to personal opinion as there are always pros and cons.

make sure you have enough space. you'll quickly realise pet store cages are not the right way to go. also, guinea pigs don't really play with toys, but you can get them hideys and tunnels. some do play but it's not really that common.

in my opinion there are people who own guinea pigs and then there are people who own guinea pigs. basically what i mean is some like them and think they are cute, don't bother to do much research though and just keep them in a itty bitty pet store cage and then there are people who become dedicated. you have to realise there's a whole other world of guinea pig care outside what seems 'conventional'.

hope i helped somewhat!

Bekkie
