I have tried Kale and Parsley so far too. They will eat carrots though. I am trying to figure out what they will like best. Any advice / recommendations? Also what do you guys think of those "Guinea Pig Food" brands that have foraging style dried veggies and pellets and what not in them?

Mine really like parsley, celery, cucumber and red/yellow pepper. The occasional tomato goes down well. They like chard too and spinach. There's a big list of foods they can and can't eat on the forum somewhere if you're in need of inspiration!

Hello Colin. The best pellets for guinea pigs are these,
http://t.zooplus.co.uk/shop/small_pets/food/guinea_pig/bunny/195679

They are grain and sugar free. A mix type food is just junk food for guinea pigs.

Romaine lettuce is very high in calcium and I do not feed it. With my pigs I give them these,
1 slice cucumber
1 slice of spring green
1 green bean
1 spring of coriander
2pieces of celery
1piece green pepper

This is a diet designed to prevent bladder sludge and cystitis. I feed it twice a day and those portions are per piggy.

Coriander is a good one and cucumber (but only a slice each a day of cucumber).

By guinea pig food brands do you mean museli style dried food? The problem with that is the piggies pick out the bits they like and leave the rest - guess what? The bits they like are the bits which are bad for them! It's better to give them a brand which is uniform nuggets so they can't pick and choose and so they get the bits which are good for them. There are loads out there. ASDA own brand are cheap and liked by a good number on here. Burgess excell (the ones with added mint) are also a popular choice. Depending on your budget and whether your piggies are prone to fungal infections or other things, there are quite a few good options sold by Zoo Plus. Vitacraft emotion, JR Farm grain free and Bunny for guinea pigs (yes I know who thought that was a good name?!). Absent any health problems you need to cater for, I think the key thing to watch out for us that the nuggets you choose don't contain molasses and that they are not too high in calcium.

Hi Colin,
Here's a few that I have tried with my piggies & have found out their favourites from that :)
Spinach, Kale (as a treat), Asparagus, Melon, Green Beans, Cabbage, Pear, Apple, Peppers, Cucumber, Kiwi, Banana, Watercress - trying to think of anymore I've given my girls! My two love the greens the most & the rind from cantaloupe melon.

I think I know what you're talking about with regards to the foraging food - I buy from the natural range at Pets at Home & they absolutely love the herb/flower packs!
With regards to their main diet though, I feed them Burgess excel tasty nuggets with blackcurrant & oregano, which they are a big fan of. The colourful mixed type foods aren't very good for them as they generally pick and choose with them & end up getting deficiency's in certain nutrients.

Hope this helps!

Ah yes I wasn't sure if we were talking nuggets or that type of forage food. Be careful on the blackcurrant and oregano nuggets - ours love those too but I hadn't realised that they had molasses in (the excell with mint doesn't) and so they aren't quite as good for them. I've now made the blackcurrant ones a treat rather than the everyday nuggets.

Thanks everyone for your input. Yeah I had been feeding them Gerty but after reading some of the reviews on here + the comments here I think that may be a bad idea. I will update my profile but I live in St.Paul Minnesota in the States. Hmm is a "spring green" something in particular?

Spring green is from the cabbage family.

Hi,
Mine eat Harrington's Optimum Guinea Pig Food. It's available at Walmart here in Canada- maybe it would be in the States as well?

Ours loves lettuces (red, green, romaine), parsley, cilantro (coriander), carrot tops, bell pepper.

We have also tried bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and he would leave them an not eat. Now though he will eat the bell pepper! It might be worth trying to offer veggies again that he did not like before.

Treats meaning sparingly: carrots, kiwi, apple, jicama

Our vet recommends Oxbow Cavy Cuisine really highly - which is a US brand. :)

Try broccoli, archie adores chomping on the big stalk. Make sure your vegetables are juicy, archie wont eat anything thats dried out or been left out for more than an hour.
