I Did A No-no

My guinea pig had an upper respiratory infection so my wife and I took him to the vet, he is young... maybe 6-7 months and he HATES getting his medicine and we have to give him it 2 times a day... so we have been having to pick him up a lot and we barely ever pick him up just because he doesn't like it... well today I was giving him some lettuce and he completely skips the lettuce and bit my finger... hard.... every now and again he will nibble if we are petting him and get near his mouth but he bit me HARD. He didn't draw blood thank god but out of pure reflex I swatted... I feel absolutely horrible and he is annoyed with good reason... is there any way for me to gain his trust back? I feel like the worst person alive...

Oh he really doesn't like his medicine eh? My boy Mo does the same- he will 'bite' firmer if he really isn't happy with something but never ever draws blood. Most importantly how hard did you swat him? Is he ok?

Secondly, food is the main way to a guinea pigs heart! Everytime you try and interact with him be sure to bring something edible and offer it- this way he'll associate you with good things. Does he have a friend? A cage mate/brother might increase his confidence and his happiness. (Obviously a cage mate would need to be found after his URI is cleared).

On the topic of handling none of my pigs have ever been to fond. They're alright once their in my arms but picking up and putting down is tricky...are you handling him with one hand under his butt and another under his belly and front paws? It he's tricky to hold when administering medicine try wrapping him in a towel like a burrito (not too firmly) and it might help. In the future if you want to pick him up just for a cuddle perhaps try a cuddle sack that he can walk into and you just pick up.

Yea he is ok and he don't have a cage mate but he is in a really high traffic area and we always talk to him, and any time I'm putting him in the cage he always freaks out, I wrap him in a towel for his medicine and I make sure that after I'm done I give him a treat and let him relax for a bit.
