My asthma has got steadily worse over the last few weeks but I have been pretending it isn't happening, until last night I had an attack so bad that the inhalers didn't work and I ended up calling an ambulance.

I spent a few hours in A&E until I was stabilised and then they chucked me out at 3.30am! I haven't had much sleep so I have taken today off work (I never take time off work usually as I am self-employed).

The reason I am posting about this on this forum is that the worsening of my asthma has been since I got Ruffle, a peruvian cross with longish hair (my original pair were short haired). I think I am even more allergic to him than the original piggies.

I really don't know what to do now. It is unfair to rehome him after he has bonded so well with Jack, and the children would be gutted. I need to find a way of living with him without ending up on hospital on cleaning out day!

dont really know what to say except good luck and perhaps going to the dr's and saying the inhaler's arent working perhaps he can prescribe something else?

can you wear a dust mask? Where do you live if i am close i will clean them out for you! :) Hope you feel better today x

How old are your children? Could he not be housed outside and leave the petting/cleaning to the children or the other half?

Hope this helps

Other half hates animals and is pressing me to get rid of them. He won't touch them at all. I am hoping my 10 year old will gradually do more to help - he already does the hamster on his own, bless him. My daughter is 7 and is enthusiastic but not much practical help!

They usually live outside in summer but they are inside now due to the arrival of the new baby who wasn't used to outside. They come in for the winter because we don't have a garage or anywhere warm enough. If I put them in the shed they would get no human contact which isn't really kind.

I am going to go to the gp tomorrow and see if I can get anything else to help with the asthma,

Mine are in the shed, I go down and see them often. It stays warmish in winter and you can always put some carpet over the hutches when it gets really cold.

Awww, that's awful - I hope you're feeling better now and have managed to get some sleep. I know how you feel about not working - I'm self-employed too!

I think a dust mask or similar sounds like a good idea, and Wiebke's advice, as ever, is pretty good. Maybe a different inhaler might help.

Maybe a shampoo for the little guy? It's possible that might help, there are some very good GP shampoos out there, just a suggestion, if he hasn't been shampooed yet, it might help wash out what ever allergens you're picking up.

Best of luck :)

A shampoo is a good idea. The older boar, Jack, is getting a bit stinky and I thought I might bath them both sometime soon. I might try to get the children to actually shampoo them (supervised obviously) - my daughter would love to play hairdressers with them!

I know it sounds daft but if I cut Ruffle's hair, would that maybe help? It is very long at the back and grows vertically up (yes really!) so he could certainly withstand a trim.

This photo shows Ruffle's hair off nicely - as you can see it is quite long behind!

I don't know about cutting hair.
My OH is allergic to pets, but particularly our current 2 GPs who are rex for one and cross sheltie for the other. Prior to that we had 2 smooth short haired one and he was OK ish with them. We have changed bedding, moved them to a different room and ensured that the hay has dust extracted but he really struggles... On the down side, they don't get as much interraction now, although my son LOVES them and always tries to sneak in with them... he's 1!

I seem to reacall you can get a spray that you put on dogs to assist with the dander and supposidly lessen the allergic reaction. I don't know how effective it is. Obviously you would have to check it was ok with piggies especially as they groom themselves a lot and could ingest it.
