i'v only noticed today that fluffy monster has some swelling around his private parts. he was neutered a couple of months ago and i checked him everyday for the first few weeks and all seemed ok. but i only noticed today he has a big swelling down one side of that area. it isn't causing him pain, and hes eating and drinking fine and going to the toilet. and he's still being his usual cheeky self. nothing out of character at all. i hadn't checked it for a couple of weeks thinking it will be ok by now but i felt the swelling when i was carring him earlier. i feel like such a bad mum to him 8... i'm trying to get him into the vets as soon as but doesn't look like i'm going to get an apointment till next week 8...8...8...

Dont put yourself down hun

You wernt to know , alot of us on here would have done the same if were honest ! If we checked our pets 24/7 we'd never have time to be on here :))

The most important thing is that now you know about it your taking action :)

Keep your chin up & good luck with the vets x

Can you push it back or is the swelling firm? If you can push it back, it is probably a hernia, if not, it looks like an abscess or infection. They can happen weeks after a neutering op.

If you are dealing with an infection or abscess, can you ask your vet for this antibiotic here: zithromax. It can save lives where baytril doesn't work; it has certainly saved my Hywel's life when he developed a nasty swelling some time ofter his neutering op (typically on a Friday afternoon, too!). Here is the contact details for the vet (Simon Maddock)who has researched it; he is one of the best guinea pig vets in the country (sadly in Northampton) so your vet can ask for confirmation: http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/contact_us.htm
Perhaps you can speak to Simon about what to do or ask your vets whether they will give you some baytril to tidy him over the weekend? Also try to get hols of Critical Care and probiotics in case the swelling is starting to affect his appetite.

Can you have your boy seen as an emergency or by another vet tomorrow?
Please weigh him daily.

Swellings can blow up quite suddenly and very quickly, so you are not a bad mum. You have probably noticed as soon as it has happened!

thankyou so much for your help! i'm panicing like mad! i think it's an infection. it's been ok for weeks. i think maybe because they have started going in the run during the day and that has caused it. i'm trying to find a vets around here that knows guinea and see which can get me in quickest. i can't drive thats all or i'd try further a field. :...

I would recommend that you ring up Simon asap for advice; he is only in every second Saturday. Then you know what you can do over the weekend.

if it is a abscess please insist that the abscess is lanced with out GA as it really, really is not needed to lance an abscess, once its lanced you need to squeeze it everyday and clean it with saline for around 2 wks and it should be healed by then, antibiotics will take ages and ages to clear it if its not lanced and if may even end up affecting his gut, so lancing is very important.

there is rescues on here that could give you a good vet local to you!

This is exactly what happened with my boy. Everything healed fine, then about a month later a noticed a lump on one side. Turned out to be an abscess which luckily cleared up quite quickly after I'd taken him to the vets and got him on antibiotics. He's absolutely fine now. I hope your boy is ok too. Just get him to a vets as soon as you can.
With Archie they did mention it may need to be operated on, but it burst on it's own (after the vet had put a needle in it, poor chap) and I managed to clear it all out.

Good luck.

My vet lanced Bumble's as soon as we got in, and showed me how to continue it at home. I am bit odd as I love pus so it was great fun as far as I was concerned, and incredibly satisfying when I got the last really thick bit out...

I'll go and sit in the corner on my own now...

thankyou soo much for the advise everyone! i am so greatful! i'v got an emergancy appointment for him first thing in the morning! thank god! i honestly can't stop crying. i feel so guilty. 8... he seems fine and dandy with himself though. i'm not looking forward to squeezing the abscess but if thats what needs doing i'm going to have 2. i'm quite squeamish :...

Oh no sorry to hear about little Fluffy Monster :(
Don't belt yourself around love........these things can happen :(
Good on you for getting an emergency appointment!
Whee have all paws and fingers crossed for the little man XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

just to keep you updated. we went to an emergancy vets first thing this morning and he thought it was an abscess and got us an appointment at my normal vets and the vet there thinks its a hernia and is keeping him in for the day to find out. mallethead poor little guy! 8... please keep your fingers crossed for him guys!

another update! hes home and happy. it was a abscess! it was drained and hes on antibiotics twice daily. and back for a checkup on friday. hes already chaseing bear around and round trying to mount her. silly boy! i'm so relieved everythings ok :):):)

I am glad that you could get him seen quickly.

Abscess can blow up out of nowhere within hours. You wouldn't believe it if you hadn't witnessed it. Please keep a good eye on the abscess that it doesn't come back.

Good that your boy is still feeling well in himself!

thanks! i no i was i so worried when i noticed it. it was boiling hot to touch so he couldn't have had it that long i would of noticed it when picking him up. but it got huge over the night. i kept getting up to check him
and yer he's his normal cheeky self. he's so brave nothing seems to phase him and i'm very proud of him :)
i'm keeping a very close eye on him @)

wheeeeeeeeeeky wonderful news!

What a relief to see him running around like his pigself again x)
Keep us updated on how he goes on Friday :)

another update, fluffys abscess has started swelling up again 8... he's on his anti biotics twice day. i just don't no what to do. he's back at vets on friday. has anyone else had this problem? does anyone know what the vets next move will be? i'm so gutted for him its unbelievable 8...8...

Abscesses are evil things grrrrrrrrrr
I have had them come back again...... last time this happened we had to have it drained again.
I also used to have to clean the wound and keep it open so the puss didn't form under the scab (not pleasant to do at all, but it did get rid of it!) I would only do this tho under instructions from the vets.
I'd call and chat to them and see if you can get in earlier than friday.
HUGS for you and lots of healing wheeeky loves from the girls and I xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My Comanche died from an absess.. after a week of trying to drain it, he was due to be operated on, where they would take part of his cheek out and stitch it up, unfortunately when we took him in the vet said that because of his age, and how much he had deteriorated so quickly, she couldnt operate any more, as he wouldnt survive and we had to have him pts 8...

it was heartbreaking, but it was the best. I have to stress though his age was against him.

Could you ask your vet if an op would be advisable? we were told they couldnt get all the absess out by draining alone. he had it drained twice, but it came back x

hugs.. hope he is ok xx

mstori i'm so sorry! can't imagine how upsetting that must be for you 8...
fluffs only 10 months and hes a fighter.
i don't no what the vets next plan of action will be. just tryed to ring but no answer. i'll do whatever it takes to make him all better. i feel its my fault for getting him neutered. but i didn't wanna seperate him from poke.
thankyou all for the good luck! he needs it
