still getting Snowy (fingers crossed we pass the homecheck tomorrow) but my husband saw a notice in the village shop about 'piggies free to good home' and he went and got one for us (turns out it was somebody we kind of know !) They got a piggie from a pet shop and it was already pregnant :( they didnt want the babies to go back through the pet shop again.

she is really sweet and has been well handled by their children. She is 9wks old (375g - we weighed her for our records when we got home) and we've named her Rosie. It seems she is a mixture of red and lilac ?

We also have seen/heard about another young sow in rescue needing a home and dont know whether to get her too ? would 3 be ok ?

this is Rosie...

She is gorgeous, well done for getting her,3 sows should be fine although you may find one piggy will get a little left out but its no big worry,i have heard of many girls getting along well in groups;)
Are you absolutely sure she isnt pregnant as if she was housed with any boys she could be? x

She's lovely, how exciting.

3 might be ok, it depends on the pigs - sometimes one gets left out but usually will be ok if you have the space (3 pigs need 5' x 2' of living space, at least)

Congratulations on your new arrival

I have 5 girls and 1 male living together and they all get on fine. (male is castrate)

well I hope she isnt pregnant as she had 2 brothers, although the lady had seperated them (not sure at what age though), so she was on her own with her mum. She got the babies sexed at the vets, so I'm presuming she would have split them early enough (fiingers crossed anyway)

the hutch is 4ftx2ft but double storey, plus they have a run. I have 2 other spare 2ftx4ft hutches too

Hi and congratulations on your new arrival, the baby boys should have been seperated at 3 weeks old it is worth checking when she was split from her brothers as vets can advise varying times from 3-6 weeks upward. Rosie and your little girl look very happy together :)

thanks I will phone the lady today and check when they were split up, if in doubt I *** take her to the vets for a check.

we have loads of animals here, big and small and Grace is incredibley gentle and respectful with them, just to note they are not soley a childs pet they are mine too lol and every animal here no matter how troublesome they are (yes I am talking about you little murphy dog, who poos on the floor every night !) has a home for life

Congratulions - Rosie is so lovely (actually it's gold and lilac, even posher!)

Three girls can work, but sometimes one is left over, like with children... It depends on the characters!

I have 6 girls all together and they are okay. When I had 4 I had one who decided to leave herself out of the group for a while so no guarantee that it wont happen with even numbers.

I would say your hutch is okay for 2 though. Not really big enough for 3.

You could get another pair for another hutch?

CONGRATS at getting your new piggie too. Your daughter looks well pleased.

Hang on I may be talking rubbish! It's 2 storey right? I don't know if the run part counts when it comes to numbers - anyone advise?

No - one hutch floor should be 4x2 ft; the run counds as run, not as hutch.

spoke to the lady tonight they were split at 4wks as recommended by her vet, so hopefully she'll be ok

Yup boys grow up fast but it is very rare that a four week old sow would get caught by her brother although not impossible it is highly unlikely.
One rare occasion where boys grow up faster than girls lol I hope she is not and all is fine. Have you had your homecheck for snowy yet?

WEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL How'd it go?

Can't wait to find out when you will be getting your rescue guinea.

had it but still havn't heard.

They aren't happy that my dogs are not vaccinated (had pupppy vaccs but have not been done since they are now 7yrs old and 18mths old) so they need to check with the other people at the rescue.

so I'm now feeling very difflated.

the odd thing is that we rehomed a rabbit from them 4yrs ago (who we still have) and they never asked about the dogs vaccinations then ?

I'm sorry to hear about the dogs being an issue, maybe things have just changed,
when i started rescuing a few years ago for the biggest rescue in my area ,the lady willingly sent home a puppy with me,my dogs had no vaccinations and it turns out the puppy had parvo virus,my 2 dogs caught it but thankfully with vetcare survived the pup however didnt.
It was only after this that she made it a rule that all foster carers animals were vaccinated(and trust me i learnt too)
but that was 2005 that it happened so i guess things change in only a short amount of time,if i was you i would go get the vaccines now which take 2-3 weeks to take effect and then you will be able to have the piggy xxxxxxxxxxx

they have just phoned me to say we can have her and can collect her tomorrow :) they spoke to their vet who said its not a problem as guinea pigs obv cant contract anything from dogs or vice versa - phew !

PHEW! Sorry you felt so rotten about the dog thing. I was going to say I hadn't heard of anything like that before.

So when do you pick her up?

YAY! That's so cool. Can't wait for some photos. Bet the two of them together have a lovely time.
