I went into a petshop I know well today to get some hay biscuits etc for my boys and had a look at their pigs as I always do. Their livestock is always good, well cared for and they only home indoors in winter. They are really sensible and I've never had a problem with them.

I was looking at their pigs today and there is alovely pair of boys in a cage by themselves. they were quite large so probably adolescent, not the usual pet shop babies. They're both really pretty cream/white& Lilac rex crosses I think.

What bothered me (appart from the fact I'm not allowed more piggies...) was that one of them looks like he has some roan characteristics. not sure if he's a lethal or not but he definately had really small ears and his eyes just weren't right. He is pink eyed and bright and healthy but his eyes weren't behaving right so I think he is partially sighted at the least. He's also far more skittish than his brother/cagemate.

They're not normally my kind of pigs - I don't really do pink eyes but they were both lovely and I'd hate for him to end up with huge problems if he has lethal genes and accidently gets somepig pregnant or god forbid has lots of health problems your average pig owner deosn't understand.

My OH says no more pigs and she really doesn't like pink eyes or rex's particularly but I really really don't want to leave him in a pet shop for some idiot to buy and he die as they can't look after him properly.

What do I do?!

Ooh that's a tough one and can understand your concerns :...
Is there any chance you could speak to the manager or someone in charge and explain your fears, this could be a potential disaster waiting to happen :(
I'd worry then what they would do with the piggy - would they give him away do you think if you told them the consequences, maybe a rescue could take him or someone who understands about this problem.
Poor little mite needs a chance :(

Yeah I don't know. If my OH half agreed I'd have them and then I know he'd be safe. I just don't know what's for the best.

Would OH be very upset if you did the deed rolleyes
Sometimes, we have to walk away as bloody hard as it is - I avoid petshops with piggies cos I'd cause havoc if I saw something out of place or come home with them :)

Yes! She'd take them back! I'll need to talk to her. We agreed no more until we have more space but I can't let this lad fall into the wrong hands....

Not sure if this will influence your decision, but there's space at V.I.Piggies for 2 more if you go for it.......:));)

My OH said exactly the same but the dining furniture is being packed off into storage for more piggies coming on Sunday :x
Have a chat with her, we know she loves the boys...she may buckle.
The staff probably have no idea about roans but if he is, they need to stop the breeder from supplying.
How sad, they sound beautiful. I love lilacs :(

Just phoned the pet shop. Don't htink they have a clue really. Tried to explain and advised a vet check but they don't routinely have vet checks apparently. They are both from the same breeder but not the same litter so chances are one is fine.

I better have a serious chat when I get home but all I want to do is jump in the car and go get them....

Grrr. I can't stand it. Sat at work doing paperwork and sorting workshop jobs instead of sorting piggies. I need to go home and cuddle my
boys...

i've been in this position before with animals (i'm banned by my chap from leeds market pet shop!) i always end up buying them, to rehome them myself to someone suitable, would your partner consider letting you 'foster' them?

Just buy them! Who cares what your partner says. As long as you can afford them and give them the time then follow your heart.

I think my marrisge proposal might be null and void if I just went and got them.!

It's just the fact they'll get bought by someone who doesn't know what They're doing and they aren't so cute as hte baby ones in the window and boys are never as popular anyway so they are on a poor start already...

They are not what I would normally pick but I think I might have fallen for them. Oh dear!

I know it's a hard choice sometimes but seeing as I couldn't afford to be living in the house I am and have the space to have more piggys if I wasn't with her then I have to at least involve her in these things!

Woo. After posting on face*ook I'm getting some help from Suzy with my lethal pet shop lads. She's going to email them some information a*out Lethals and offer them rescue spaces for the pair.

I can short term foster them if needed so she can take them.

Phew I feel much happier now.

How about a little white lie?
You could get them, and say someone on here is going to be taking them 'cos they heard about your concerns so you're holding onto them so no one else bought them at the shop. Then er, that person goes on hols. Oops. They they have a case of mites at their place so you may just need tp have them a little longer but yes of course they'll be moving on shortly. Maybe in a bit. Bit longer..By which point they should have grown on your OH and she'll be like aw they're so lovely! :))

So the petshop didn't have an email address soI managed to fax Suzy's letter to the shopping centre with an enormous F.A.O The pet shop sign on the top by 8.30 this morning.

Now they've got the information about lethals on paper and mine and Suzy's contact details how long do I wait before checking what's happening?!

I can't let them sell them. It's mad.

If they received it at that time and it's now early afternoon, how do you feel about calling them to see what there plan is ?
Sometimes the only way to get through to these people is to make a nusiance of yourself so they know you're not going to go away quietly.
I would make it clear that if these boys are still for sale, you will be taking this matter to the Council or RSPCA :o

It's just difficult cos henerally they are a really good pet shop i.e. no mixed species cages, good sexing, knowledgable staff and good care sheets etc so I don't want to annoy them. I just want the best for the boys....

Is it local to us ?
I know of P@H at St. John's retail and Doolittle's, Bridgenorth. Rarely use them so can't think of shops ?/

It's two by two in Merry Hill. Going to give them a call in a bit after I've finished my work.

Ok given them a call and spoken to them.

They received the information Suzy sent up and their animal manager has reviewed it and is confident all their animals are 100% healthy or else they wouldn't sell them.

I hope that's true. I hope they will now know what a lethal is if they come across one.

I still don't wanna leave them there though grrrr

When I read earlier what you said about this usually great pet shop, I was getting my coat on and my debit card warmed up in preparation for a visit!

But I nearly fell off my chair when you said you were talking about Two by Two.....I've heard completely the opposite about the knowledge displayed by their staff and their animal care standards :{ and i can't say I've been massively impressed by the place whenever I've been in :(

I've never had any problems there and I usually look at things very carefully...

Maybe I should be worried about these two lads.... Oh it's driving me mad.

perhaps you could go and get them?

I've not heard of it - sorry, I'm a bit backward on these places.
I don't care for pet shops purely because of the treatment of animals and get far too upset if and when I do.
Before we went to collect Bruce and Sheila our huspig and wife from Sue who did the the piggy train, it was a beautiful hot afternoon and we stopped at a garden centre and I was gobsmacked that they had baby piggies. Tiny, tiny little furry things, could have been rexes/swiss/teddies and very very young in a pen about 2ft long. They had no food, water bottle was green :)>>> it was disgusting. I walked out in tears after shouting the odds :x
Stores do only put profit first and we've had massive debates on here but did you speak to your OH about them ?
The store probably don't know what lethals are and once they're sold, it's not their problem :(

Still can't get these tow out of my mind. Think I've got to go back and have another look at them....
