So, for a few years now I've been known as "The guinea pig lady" at work, and anything guinea pig related gets directed straight to me. I've given advice to loads of customers who ask me about piggies, whether it be advice about piggies they already have, or they're thinking about getting piggies and want to know more about them.
Most of the time I speak to them for a while and then give them a list of websites such as guinealynx, guineapigcages, etc, and a way of contacting me in case they need any more help.
What I was thinking, is that it would be so much better if I could refer people to my own website - one where I know the content and where they can contact me easily if they need any help. Make it very user friendly and easy to find the most basic information for first time owners who may get easily confused by some of the other sites with all of their complicated jargon!
It could be a huge online resource with advice from lots of different piggy people so that there is a whole host of knowledge and advice available. It only needs to be the basic advice, but time after time I am shocked by how little people know about their piggies, as well as how people think the only veg they can eat is carrots and lettuce!
I've learnt so much from being a member on here and really want a better way to share it with people rather than just telling them facts and hoping they remember them!

It could also have links to sites like cavy couture and AudioHeart's cosies site, etc, to help everybody out :) I'm also thinking about contacting Alison from Guinea Pig Magazine if the website takes off.

What I'd love is, if anybody is interested, let me know, and I can start to gather together lots of resources and names of people who are interested and everyone can do their bit. I haven't quite decided whether to just try and build a free one or to pay for one - I guess it depends on the interest. I already own my own website for my photography so have some experience with websites :)
Of course, everyone would get credit for everything they contribute!
And obviously, it won't just be for customers at my work, it will be available for everyone!

That sounds like a fab idea hun - if it helps the piggies and educates people, I'd be happy and sure all of us on here will be too.
You could perhaps ask members who are particulary experienced in certain areas if they would be willing to accept and answer emails ?/ so you would have someone with great advice to a particular issue to share their knowledge.
Hope you get this off the ground, I thinks it's brill :))

I've just re read your thread and realised that is your intention - I must read things a bit slower :(

That's a great idea, so many websites give the wrong info about guinea pig care it would be good to have one that is up to date:))

hi i would absoulotly love to be involved! i have a website name too, umm how about cavycrazy or crazycavy? hope this helps! i would love to join in and help!

Thisis a great idea. Make sure you include links to all the good websites out there and a list of reputable rescues.

I will be of help if I can. let me know if you need anything.

i'm not an 'expert' but if there's anything i can do to help let me know.
as for names i like gigglepigs :) x

oOoO! What a fabulous idea :) What about something like pigoogle? :)) (Google....but for piggie stuff) :))

I was actually thinking the other day of setting up a boar website (there seems to be a lack of them) as i have five websites i can build which is included in my package. :) If you would like i don't mind being one of the contacts for boar behaviour I'm not an expert but have lots of experience and knowledge with boars, bonding, trios, neutering, illness, housing etc. so just shout if you need a hand.

:)

Boars is definately a topic people don't know much about and struggle with so very important...

Right, I'm all ready to set it up, just need a name now!
I was thinking GuineaPedia but there's already an iPhone app called that :/

RIGHT! Bumping this up guys, I finally have some time where Uni work is very quiet so I can get started on it!
I'm spending the day setting it up and will show you what I've done so far when I'm happy - opinions, contributions, etc, very welcome!

A boar only website would be fab, not enough is known aout them me thinks. I think the only one i've ever found was 'barmy anout boars' At work all boar realated questions or mixes are usually directed at me becasue i seem to be the only mug there insistant on keeping boars and only boars!

Back onto the original topic - sounds like a great project, i can't wait to see what you have produced :)

Just spoke to some friends and they would like explainations on:

- grooming long haired piggies

- local rescues

- how to pick a healthy piggy

- and a sort of myth busters section (about things like how many piggies male or female can live together as there is a lot of confusion over this)

If I think of anything I will post on here later.

Oh and maybe you could do a list of useful books and cavy savy vets. It's a great idea though and should keep you busy!

That's great, thank you! I love the myth busters section, I often get silly myths asked about at work!
I will be looking for a co owner or two in the future if the site takes off as it'll be a lot to manage on my own while writing my dissertation.

I know you guys are anti breeding, But! I think it would be a good idea to offer some advice in this area too (be it someone who chose to breed or find they have a pregnant female). Something that goes into the pros and cons (not too harsh as you want people to take the advice on board!).

I this is my dog site (for my breeding chihuahuas) i know its dog based but it may offer some ideas as to what advise to add in this section (should you choose to add one).

It is only a site of basic care - for more in detail advice I will offer links to sites such as guinea lynx etc. I will not offer information on breeding as the site is predominantly for my customers at work who I encourage against breeding :)

Fair enough, i had the idea you were doing it on overall care :red my bad :x

It is overall care, but just the basics really - mainly because I get so many customers at work who don't know just how many different veggies they can eat, or about basic behavioural traits, etc :)
I'd be worried if I mentioned breeding on there that it may encourage people to give it a try :(
Your site is fab though!

Fair point :), i thought about mentioning it so people can see what can go wrong, and not to go into it lightly. But if the site is for feeding, grooming etc you probably wont need it as you say, maybe have a bit in health with links to the other sites that touch on the subject :).

I've just been admiring your incredible marine tanks and sea horses. Also love the picture of the three dogs snuggling on the couch.

Wow it looks awesome :) A simple basic guide is a good idea. I remember when I started to really learn about guinea pigs and looked at these websites and there was just so much information it was a little overwhelming and hard to remember everything. So something that is quick and to the point is very helpful :) and I love the mythbusters section :)) There are lots of myths I have heard about guinea pigs so that is very useful.

Are you able to put videos in the behavior section? It would be really cool for people to see how guinea pigs wheek for dinner or popcorn and stuff :) Not many people realize how expressive piggies can be
