Hey there guys...

Over the last 3 days, my guinea pig Koyo hasn't been right at all. He just sat in the corner of his cage looking depressed and eating very little...:( Lastnight I noticed what looked like...pinky/whitish goo coming from the side of his eye.

I took him to the vets today, and they said it may be an infection so I've been given some eye drops to see how he does over the week. But I'm still worried as he still looks so depressed and still isn't eating properly...

Then the vet told me that if it doesn't clear up within a week, it's a sign of something more serious and that it may be a tumour.

I couldn't help but cry my eyes out at this moment, he then said to me the kindest thing to do would be to put Koyo to sleep as he most likely wouldn't survive an operation. 8...

He was fine up until the other day, I just don't get it! :( I'm so scared, I don't want to have to put him to sleep...

I just don't know what to do to help Koyo feel better...I wish he would eat and drink...He's been eating a little bit, but should I syringe feed him to make sure he's getting enough?

Thank you for any advice anyone can give...

x

Ow! I am so sorry! I don't want him to get put to sleep either. Maybe you could post some pictures of the wound? I hope he is okay! Even if it is a tumor you have caught it early on so maybe he can get it cut out?

Good luck Koyo!:laluot_29::laluot_29:

Sending lots of vibes to Koyo x

Have you got a heat source for him? Maybe a little syringe feed would encourage him to start eating x

I don't know which vet you took him too, but personally I would get another opinion as without an x-ray or scan how can they tell it's a tumour?

From where you are you could get him down to the CCT in Cambridge, they will x-ray him whilst conscious & the cost if small for any treatment, it's just £30 to join that covers any amount of piggies you own.

Good luck hope he will be okay.

I Ditto, all the above - if the vet has done no test's they cannot advise he has a tumour!

In the meantime if he isn't eating correctly you have to syringe feed him and weigh him daily so you can monitor any weight loss.

oh so sorry to hear this, we lost our piggy last year to a tumour, but he was passing lots of blood in his wee, he lost weight very rapidly, he had antbiotics which i syringed into his mouth, but sadly it was too severe,do hope you have more luck with yours xx

Definatly get a second opinion. How can they possibly diagnose a tumour with no xray/scans? scandelous!

I can only agree - have Koyo seen by an experienced piggy vet to get another opinion!

In the meantime, please weigh Koyo daily and hand feed him with mushed up pellets or Critical Care to prevent any further weight loss and up his chances at survival.
Here are tips for the ill piggy: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html#tips

I am so sorry to hear this. At least have him looked at by another vet and see what they say. Do not be sad as it may not be serious at all.

:( How can they say that to you when they havent even x-rayed or scanned him?

As everyone has said, get a second opinion it could be something very simple and easily corrected. I saw a little piggie today with a dislocated leg, living a very happy normal life with a friend. Other people would probably have put that little girl to sleep, but shes in a loving home and very happy.

Please dont be upset :( x

I read you case and i am also sure that it would not be a tumor.
You should consult to your doctor first just for the sake of clearance.
I hope your tests would result negative.

Oh I am so sorry to hear he's unwell.

I agree with everyone else - you should see a different vet.

From what his symptoms are,, I don't understand how they can say it might be a tumor when it could be so many other things. Does he even have a lump that you're aware of?

My brother's guinea pig had a very obvious tumor & my mam's guinea pig has a very obvious lump (which is thankfully only a cyst) so we could think they were tumors.

Don't fear the worst just yet.
