I may so mad but, would you take your piggie to the park?

I live in a flat and when he is older will it be safe to carry Honkey to the park and put him on the lead?
Of course I will aware of dangers like dogs.

At the moment with how hyper he is, constanly popcorning, also when he is doing it on me I am scared he may hurt himself, so I am going to get some C&C when my other half gets paid and have it in my kitche when the cat is out and I have seen this item on ebay which tickels me

I would never ever ever put a lead on a guinea pig...

Not to mention the risks of disease, escape, being trodden on.....
 
Hiya,

Leads are a no no for Guinea Pigs, you may be gentle but one small pull could snap their backs. Just get an indoor pen. Honkey will be happy foraging indoors.

I used to have a garden when I last had piggies donkey years ago and was wondering as my park is normally empty but I was wondering how I would prevent him running away.
Oh well he will have to put up with an indoor run in the kitchen when Corey Cat is out.
 
Nooo! and I agree leads are a no no, I have a garden but my piggies are quite happy to run around indoors, I live in a studio flat with 5 boys (pigs....... :o) Make your room piggy proof or section off an area for them to run around in, mine are so used to it now they have the whole flat! Bully goes everywhere, whereas Cubby, Golly and Archie tend to stick to the main room, Pookie just has a quick once round the room and straight back in.(all seperately of course, we have a strict timetable!)

But you can pick some grass for Honkey and give it to him (when he's a bit older) he will enjoy that just the same to be honest, if they aren't used to going outside they just sit there looking at you frozen with fear anyway!
 
Thanks for that advice, I think Kyles pay pack will have to be robbed for 4' x 7' (48" by 84") worth of C&C, thats the space I have in the kitchen, to give him a run/play pen, because other wise he will get behind all the white goods.
 
here's another idea, i use play pens as sort of fences to block of wires and the tv etc, then they cant get behind anything or chew wires but they get the run of the two main rooms downstairs :) just a thought x
 
7 foot x 4 foot is loads of room, he will be in piggy heaven :)
 
I used to let mine run on the living room carpet, until i got a new carpet.
I dont want them to poo and wee all over it and spoil it.

does anybody elses pigs make a mess alot.
 
Honkey only poos on me, my brown leather sofa or his cage.
Wee though he is not fussy so far he has weed on me, Kyle and Kyles daughter (my step daughter) but he don't we when I am wearing my dressing gown, he just uses me as a climbing frame.
 
Mine don't really make a mess when out of their hutches/cage but I don't give them free time on the floor in the living room because of my daughters. My dad would have a fit if he saw pigs all over the floor and the girls playing with them, he is strict on hygeine!...lol So pigs go on newspaper in the hall, it's laminate so easily cleaned.

I wouldnt let them into the park, but not just for the lead reason.

I would be more concerned about the stuff they could pick up there, the grass must have dog urine and feaces on it, all that sort of thing.

As for running space in the house - what I used to do is make a simple run out of Grids, and underneath it I would put a Molton-Sheet and some towels on top.

NOTHING gets through that.

Molton is the sort of incontinence sheet that you also get in smaller for baby beds, it will absorb so much urine, and it doesnt go through it. It can be washed at up to 90°, its really great :)

Maybe its called differently in the UK, but its one of these things to go onto your mattress, underneath the sheet:

Is that a cossy I can see in the bottom right hand cornor?
OK this may sound thick but do your guineas wee in it?
I have been thinking of getting one for Honkey but not only is it wee proof, how quickly do they take to dry after you have washed it and also Honkey is a chewer is it chew proof?
I have seen them on eBay but did not want to ask the seller in case they thought I was dumb :embarrassed: :laugh:

My aunties friends little girl had a guinea pig and got a lead for it and walked it in her house but now ive got her guinea pig as she couldnt leave it in her house and asked me to get it ::)

Because guinea pigs have extremely fragile spines and limbs that could be broken if they struggled to escape from a lead/harness.
 
Oh i know that but if they dont struggle and are very placis and enjoy it though :)
 
I think I read in one of Peter Gurneys books that he took one of his to the park in a picnic basket ;D

But I suppose that it's not really worth risking it when an indoor run will be just as good. :)

If they get scared they could try to run into a dark space and easily get hurt..even the most friendliest, placid piggies who don't seem to be scared of much can try to run away if they feel threatened etc.

Might aswell just use an indoor run or let them run around the room and block off dangerous places ;)
 
I'm confused - one min you were saying it was fine if they were placid but now you're agreeing with us that they could still get scared and hurt themselves? ? lol :P

Its only cause i cant be bothered to explain my point and opinion and i was replying to daftscotslass Its not that I'm agreeing to anything but only about the bit about their backs etc :)

We have 'Slipper Beds' in the cages, (well Pepe doesn't because he'll chew anything) and they do wee in it but they are washable up to 60 degrees I think. I wash ours every few weeks. The boys love them! But keep an eye out to make sure they do not chew them. Pepe munched a small hole through one, but the others never tried it after the initial investigatory nibble :)

OMG Thanks for the link ive never seen that site before and looks great - Will definitaly be getting my guinea pigs some new things soon - Oh thats bad isnt it - Spending all my money ? ;D
 
Also, as well as my other points, how is it supposed to be tight enough to stop the guinea from escaping, but loose enough not to hurt it? They are awful things I think >:(
 
i got some leads when i was in spain... it was one of those massive pet places with bags and clothes for dogs and all... but they r like body socks, no straps, so it doesnt pull on particular bit of them.... i thought it was a bit mean trying to walk them though so i never bothered much with putting them on the pigs...

u can get a run in pets at home, i use it in the house when I'm cleaning cages, its in the hamster section.. it similar to having 8 sections of c&c side by side but not as tall... and its multi coloured which everyone seems to like... only £9.99... i use 2 of them and the 7 girls have plenty of space in it....
so if your only for having them in a run occasionally maybe this would be cheaper than building a c&c cage, ill try put a pic up...
