Hi
I am 9 years old and I am doing a school project about guinea pigs. I have 2 of my own:) and I love them. For my project I want to find out why people keep guinea pigs as pets and some funny piggy experiences. I would love to hear your answers. Thank you for your help.

Why I keep piggies? I guess because I was an animal care student, I wanted to keep animals because of my love for them. Any species, size, shape or colour. I feel there's something you can get from animals, some kind of calmness.

Funny experiences...hmmm. Well, Phoenix has a habbit of sticking her head in toilet rolls and walking around and into things. That always makes me laugh. I also love watching them in the run as my sows have a habbit of creating a "piggy train", with the dominant sow in front leading the way. The other day I saw Sway (the dominant sow) take a drink from the water bottle while in the run, and 2 other piggies copied her, then continued to follow where she went. I find that more mezmorising than funny though.

People who say Guinea Pigs don't have a brain couldn't be more wrong. I think they are extremely intelligent, just some people aren't open minded enough to believe it!

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Hope you stay on the forum even when your school project is finished. It's a fantastic place for all guinea pig lovers. I have 2 girls called Blossom and Daisy. They will be 3 years old in June.

I can only speak for myself here but I love having guinea pigs as pets as I love their little characters and how each of them are all individual. I love their wheeking and how they love to sit and get a cuddle from me. I love watching them running about the livingroom floor - they're like sheep the way they follow each other everywhere! :)) I love it when they get really excited when I open the fridge door and they hear a bag rustling, just in case there might be a wee treat coming their way.

I have 2 cats as well and Daisy loves to wind them up - she will run up to them when they're about (and she must know they're not allowed to touch her), then she quickly runs away again as though she wants chased. Its really funny watching her. Blossom doesn't do that though, that would be too much exercise for her - she's very laid back and loves just chilling out.

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

Like you, I have grown up with guinea pigs; now I have a group of eight rescue guinea pigs. My neutered male was chosen by his then companion who has died since.

The other seven females have been added for different reasons - a couple to spare my male the pining when his older companion health started to go down, so he wouldn't be alone when she died.
Another one was part of a big rescue operation and had the same big sad eyes and similar markings to my very first adult piggy. She was pregnant when she was rescued, and the only daughter in a last litter of four came with her, so I had a little youngster for the first time in five years again!
Two I have adopted because of their looks - they are a special longhaired breed that reminds me of my childhood piggies.
The last one is a four year old lady that has lost her sister and her home at New Year; not many people want to rehome an elderly piggy, even though they usually have great personalities and are much easier to handle.

I could not live without piggies anymore - they have such big personalities for their small size and are so communicative. There is hardly a day when they do not make me laugh!

My first adult guinea pig was very enterprising; one day, she suddenly disappeared and I couldn't find her anywhere. Finally, I hit upon calling for dinner and I got this little squeak from upstairs - Minx had discovered the stairs!
Here is a picture of her going up on another occasion:

Minx also managed to sneak into the fridge while my hubby was dithering about what to have for lunch once:
