Is this true?

Also what about a guinea pig that has been in with a rabbit, is it possible it will pick up something bad?

I was thinking about getting hay from the riding stables, but it won't be packaged, just picked up and I'm sure it will be full of something? What do you think?

I highly doubt it!

I think guineas can pick up something from rabbits - rabbits carry it with no trouble, but a guinea can contract it and their immune system can't handle it. I have no idea what it's called :-\

Some hay is better than no hay. Horse quality hay is usually ok. It should smell fresh and look good, it should have been stored in a barn or similar. Sounds like the guinea in the pet shop already has mites, and probably lice too, so if you got him/her you priority should be getting those treated.

Yes you must practise good hygine at all times with any animall, infact with any aspect of life it's always important to wash your hands and keep areas as germ free as possible. :)

Oh I'm forever washing my hands ::) I cant help it and no wander my hands are soo dry ;D
Its not that i think my guineas are dirty or anything as i know they arent as they are kept in very clean conditions its just that I'm always clean and i think I'm too obsessed with cleaning things to be honest :embarassed: :)

You can never be too careful. I got a bad sickness bug because some idiot in Macdonalds didn't wash his hands properley when preparing food. I was ill for 3 weeks! They gave me a £10 voucher to go back again! As if! ;D

I agree, always always wash hands thoroughly. Rabbits can pass Bordetella on to piggies, its a common bacterial respiratory infection. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, loss of appetite, depression, weight loss and in severe cases death. Bordatella is commonly found in rabbits, but rarely causes them any problems. However, buns can pass Bordatella on to piggies even if they appear well themselves.

Hope this helps.

at the fodder store here they have guinea pigs and rabbits together when i complained to the rspca about it they said we keep our rabbits and guinea pigs together too.
after each guinea pig or animal i touch or bedding etc i always wash my hands. the hay should be alright from the riding stables as long as it is clean and smells alright- not mouldy etc. good luck, have you talked hubby into a piggy yet? sending hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-* :-*

i agree it's probably possible, but with any animal or anything really, children etc. just keeping everything clean and your hands washed etc. is the best precaution anyway and then it shouldn't happen i wouldn't think O0

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. It's really common and like pelicano says, wash your hands and it shouldn't be a problem. You're more likely to catch it from poor hygiene in the kitchen!

Sorry about the wrong spelling, my english has gone to pot living here in Turkey! Thanks for all your great advice.
