ahhh it is well and truly driving me insane. I moved up to Manchester at the end of June with full of hope and excitement moving to a big city with lots of career possibilities and it has turned out to be one disappointment after another. I can't seem to get a job anywhere. whats worse is I have gcses, ND, Ba(hons) couple jobs in the past but still nothing. Ive had probably about 4 maybe 5 interviews after applying for over 100s jobs. My interviews go really well and when I ask for feedback why I didn't get the job all they say is positive things or that I'm over qualified for the job! Its really unfair and is knocking my confidence a lot.... Sorry for my rant. Is anyone else having something similar or is anyone able to offer me a job :)) just thought Id ask incase haha.

Hey :) I have the same problem. Me and my hubby moved to Manchester in 2006. He was lucky enough to find a teaching job and I thought I would find it easy to find a job with my Maritime Business and Management degree. Four years later, I am still stuck in a dead end job which I hate and have had so much disappointment. The last job interview I had was at a freight forwarding company at Manchester airport. I thought I did so well and thought I was finally in there. Well, I didn't get the job and it turned out that it went to a relative of someone who already worked there mallethead Talk about a kick in the teeth :(

I know I should be lucky as I already have a job but it really isn't what I want to be doing and has nothing what so ever to do with what I graduated in.

(((hugs))) xx

Welcome to Manchester, home of the jobless masses. I could pay you to clean out the piggies and write my assignments for me :)) But I'm not sure you'd be interested in Great Expectations, All My Sons and Madame Bovary... I know I'm not :))

I totally feel for you hun and it must be so disappointing when you cant find anything.
I am in a similiar situation, I have always worked in travel and really getting bored of it now, same old thing time and time again and its just not satisifying anymore.
When I'm looking out for jobs they are either really rubbish pay, part time hours when I need full time or I just dont have the experience they are looking for. I recently applied for a courier job for tnt too, it sounded like the perfect thing for me and I had the experience they were looking for, mostly customer service etc and I got a letter the other day to say other candidates fitted job better.

I also got an interview for The Derbyshire, trouble was I ended up cancelling it as the pay was alot less than I'm on now and found out they are making lots of people redundant too so it totally put me off :(

I'm now getting worried about my job as we are soon to be taken over by another company too and again they are shutting shops down and making people redundant. Apparently its all going ahead at the beginning of December, so wouldnt be nice either just before Christmas.

I think all you have to do is keep looking even send your c.v to places who are not even advertising vacancies, its amazing how many companies actually need staff but dont even advertise (in fact the last two jobs Ive had both had not advertised but I sent in my c.v and just got lucky at the right time).

I hope you find something soon hun. Big hugs and try not to feel down x

Unfortunately yes, I've applied for approx 66 job vacancies since last September and haven't even had an interview, it sucks.

Yeah thats all I seem to be doing sending cv's left right and centre. Iv got a degree in fashion design so you would have thought I should be able at least to get a job in a clothing retail shop but then again as Ive been told I'm over qualified to sell clothes?! funny that aint it.

In answer to your question nutmeg - I'm basically looking for like 9 to 5 job mon to fri, got degree in fashion design, so I can sew, pattern cut etc. working in retail, admin work, looking for anything really. Only problem about looking for retail work now is they are looking for mostly christmas temps which is fine if I was staying up here for Christmas but I'm not my mum wanted me to come home for it and to me Christmas means family.

Feeling for you,and unfortunatly it can only get worse Don't like to sound like the grim reaper, but once the public sector starts cutting,it will be even harder to find jobs.
Myself and my hubby don't know if we will have jobs next year.I am nursery nurse trained, and i have been looking recently, there is absoloutly nothing out there. The only jobs there seems to be is in care homes, call centres, distribution centres.
Hope something turns up.

I completely understand how you feel as I lost my job in August and have been on the dole since. I'm signed up to agencies who have put me forward for interviews and all the feedback that I have got is that I am over qualified as I have always worked in management.

Just stick with it and try to stay positive, I had a meeting with the job centre the other week and they helped me improve my CV which I have to say was a breakthrough for me as I realised that I was totally underselling myself. If you inbox me your e-mail address I will forward you my CV which has the sort of layout that employers are looking for apparently. The guy that helped me with m CV had just been on a CV writing course 2 weeks earlier

I changed my CV two weeks ago and I have landed my first interview off it for next week. It is a job that I actually can do and I have really relevant work experience for the position, and the best thing of all is that it pays £13500 a year more than my last job! So it would be a massive pay rise. I am going to get this job, no negative thoughts will enter my head.

It will happen for you I'm sure

wishing you lots of luck with your interview.

And, i hope things get better for you chrissy88

I am having the same problem in Liverpool,
I have gone for so many interviews and have had the same thing,
(didnt do anything wrong, overqualified, friend of the company getting it)
I have worked for years in customer service and Admin, - last job as a PA at the Health & Safety Executive - youd think that would stand you in good stead to be able to get a basic job!

I have an interview tomorrow and so really hoping to get it, i cant face another rejection 6)

It will be a bleak christmas if nothing happens...

try gumtree jobs, agencies, job centre/directgov website, and searching for big institutions in your vicinity ( I look at stuff for liverpool uni and the council - although council jobs probably wont last)

Hope you have some luck,

Katie:p

good luck in the pool x

whereabouts in Manchester to you live? I work in the British Gas office in Old Trafford and we are currently recruiting :) Its work on the phones but the benefits are very good x

aw good luck with your interview guys hope you get the jobs =)

idlewildgirl - I live in clayton (next to man city grounds) How can I apply?

Have you joined all the agencies? Also, what looks really good is volunteering, go to the do-it site (google it) and find a volunteer job in your area in the section you'd wish to build your skills, or that you enjoy :) They are more likely to take on people with experience then any other. I've been looking for 3 months, I've had one interview and they didn't tell me why I didn't get the job, I've just started volunteering.

I got a job!

Keep the faith everyone, I was so convinced itd be a no, but was wrong!

The best piece of advice i reckon is to actually call the agencies every week and private jobs you go for, just so you are more 'real' to them rather than an email..

If you see a job on an agency list, maybe try to find their website and speak to someone there, this doesnt work everytime but you put a voice to the name/application...

Hope everyone gets something soon!:)

x
