Here is a set of photo's of my piggy who has an open wound with something inside. I have taken him to the vet and he is unsure what it is that is inside the wound, he tried to remove it but Kip got too distressed 8... I was so upset. He has prescribed medication that would normally treat abscesses as he wants whatever it is to be pushed out. I have to go back next week and if it isn't any better he has to have an operation to be knocked out and have whatever it is removed! We only bought him 2 weeks ago but we love him to pieces and I am beside myself not knowing what to do for him.

Please help me.

Davinia x

hello and welcome,

you've come to the right place for advise, mine's not that great but there'll be somebody along soon who'll be more medically advanced than me.

It looks like it's been an abcess that's burst to me, but without actually seeing it I wouldn't really like to say. I can't understand how he's got something in it. Is he kept on his own or with another piggie? It could be of been an infested bite wound from his previous cage mates maybe?

Poor little mite, bless him. Best of luck to you.

I also am not able to advise but didn't just want to read and run. Let us know how he gets on. He looks a gorgeous boy. I would ring whoever you got him from and get some history on him x

He is on his own. He is a really cuddly piggy and has been since day one so we have always held him and groomed him. This literally appeared on Sunday evening, it was a lot smaller and wasn't weeping as much. We couldnt get a vets appointment until this morning and by then it was much worse :( The vet seems to think that it he, as you have mentioned, had a scrap in the pet shop that could have left him with whatever is in the wound and it has progressively got worse. He is our only pet and we are very clean people, I couldn't think that it is something he has picked up from the house. We really dote on him so he isn't left alone or anything, my hubby and I are always playing with him and he hasn't been injured in any way :( We are just so worried about him!

Has he been outside or in contact with outside animals? Just incase it is a tick bite?

Your vet has been doing the sensible thing under the circumstances. It looks like a burst abscess or cyst to me (more like abscess).

Make sure that you get hold of some probiotics, either from the vet or from p@h in order to bolster the guts from the effects of the antibiotic and keep up his appetite and general wellbeing. Keep his wound open, but clean as much as you can to prevent an abscess from building up.

If there is an object at the bottom and it is is too firmly lodged in, your vet will need to have a good look at it (and be able to remove it) under general anaesthetic. It could be something from within the other piggy's mouth when he bit. Thankfully, things are a lot safer now than they used to be.

Best of luck!

Welcome to the forum Davinia. Obviously we've no way of knowing for sure, but from the pictures and based on what I've seen and dealt with, I would say it does look like a burst abscess. When they burst spontaneously they tend to leave quite a hole.

Does it smell at all?

Thank you all so much for replying to me.

Romily - He hasn't been outside. We live in a flat so he just runs around the house, with my little boy in tow normally :)

Wiebke - The vet did mention putting him under GA and removing whatever is lodged. He wanted to try this first as he is only a few months old and hoped to avoid any GA. How would you recommend cleaning it? With water and cotton wool?

Laura - Yes it does have a funny odor, poor little love. Would that strengthen your thought that it is an abscess? Is there anything I can do for him other that what the vet has given me?

Thank you all again x

Davinia, the odour does strengthen my thought of abscess, yes. Could be that he got into a fight at some point, something as simple as a bite wound can lead to an abscess, and abscesses do tend to brew for a little while before any clinical symptoms appear. I am dubious as to whether I am seeing anything lodged in there though, with the abscesses I've dealt with it looked pretty much the same, so I can't really say if anything is lodged in there and what it could be, as it does need an examination from someone very experienced with this kind of thing.

Whereabouts are you?
