I have two girls suffering with a UTI yet again, both of them keep getting it. After a period of 1 month they were clear of any symptoms, then they went out on the fresh grass for the first time in 9 months and suddenly Tizzie and Willow both have UTI's again! Both my girls appear to begin with interstitial cystitis which is just blood in the urine triggered by high calcium foods, such as parsley, kale and grass, then it turns into an infection, always. From what I've read IC does not cause UTI's, but in my case it has. Tizzie went to the vet on wednesday and has Metacam and Sulfatrim for now, she is responding well, the urine is being cultured at the moment. Willow will have to go to the vet now too.

Hi!

UTI and IC are two different things. What you are decribing is not UTI but the acute phases of IC that happen regularly.
Please stay off any trigger foods for IC if you can while a piggy has IC; it can trigger acute episodes that are similar to a UTI. Antibiotics can get a flare up down in some cases; in others they don't work at all. But it is typical for IC that these acute phases happen irrespective of treating with an antibiotic. They flare up from time to time and can only be manaaged but not cured. It is up to you and your vet as whether you think it is good treating each acute episode with an antibiotic, as it is not going eradicate IC flare-ups.

I am going through this with my Maud at the moment, she has a very inflamed bladder and is being treated with antibiotics which help for a while and then stop working. I think she will be diagnosed with IC eventually. You could ask your vet about using a glucosamine based product like Cystophan. Maud is on this at the moment along with a diuretic as she has sludge.

The vet thinks Tizzie has an infection, but like you say 'trigger foods' would not cause an infection, but a flare up of IC, which is why I'm unsure what exactly is causing this. I noticed white gloopy discharge around Tizzie's bottom tonight, looked like a mucus plug but Tizzie has just finished her season, not started, so I'm not sure if it is a plug or discharge from an infection. There is no blood in her urine now, no squeaky pees since starting her medication but she does appear to have slight urine scald and this discharge, no smell to it. I also noticed before this, she was doing lots of calcium deposit pees, which was sudden and she wasn't fed anything to cause that, I've read on a different post one of your comments that said this is common a few days before a flare up of IC or UTI, which definitely seems to fit. How do I know if Willow and Tizzie have reccuring UTI's or IC, is there a test the vet can do to determine that?
