COVID-19 Ideas for kids thread

Ask your children to write a letter to themselves about how they are feeling about the Coronavirus, no school, shelves empty etc. They will find it very carthartic and will be able to look back on it in years to come and maybe read it to their children and even grandchildren.

Talking of writing letters @Betsy children could be encouraged to draw pictures or write letters for those who are alone and isolated.
I think a lot of people on the receiving end will appreciate them and there’s enough community support groups to pass stuff on if people don’t know anyone personally

My sons guitar teacher is doing some free online guitar lessons which i thought was good... TV Celeb called Joe Wicks is doing P.E Lessons for kids on You Tube at 9am every morning.. Lots of online stuff available for the younger ones.. Mine are a bit older (13 & 15) so are doing their work from school... Well my daughter was until she split a glass of water over her laptop earlier

There was a house on my way home from work where the windows were full of children's drawings of rainbows and messages of support. Not very educational but it really made me smile and it's a great way to spread joy which i feel is highly important at the moment.

Learn what other people in different countries eat and how they eat it. Do they use a knife and fork? chopsticks? their hands? one hand? what do they use the other hand for?

How about a special project that can be fun and educational?
How do children in another country live?
What kind of food do they eat?
Learn a few basic phrases in the language etc

This is the approach I like to take at work. You could do this with so many things and it can be adapted to your child's interests age and learning style. Maybe choosing one or two things a week and exploring them in as many ways as possible? pinterest is great for ideas?

write a story/ letter
make a piece of artwork
cook something
learn a song
do some messy play (slime, shaving foam, play-dough, water, sand, rice)
read a book on the topic
watch videos online
do a science experiment
try an active activity

learn about a new animal?
learn about a mathematical concept (shape, graphs, +-%x, <>=, measurements)?
learn about a type of dance?
learn about a plant?
learn about an artist/ art style?
learn about a time in history?
learn about a scientific concept (gravity, acidity, light, chemistry, biology)?

We have rainbows in our window too 💖

A neighbour put up a huge rainbow in their window and chalked the pavement with "We'll get through this together", have to say really cheered me up, was also the only neighbour to cheer on the NHS on Thursday, really good to have someone that's trying to keep people's spirits up.

I saw some in the window up the road today on our way home from our walk.
Reading eggs and maths seeds are good for the under 7s
Ours have this. I think it goes to older as my son was using it as well.

ixl is another good one to test them on what they’ve learnt. And conquer maths has videos to watch for each topic, before they answer some questions. There’s also a test for the section. And lastly education quizzes. Has it by key stage and there’s a section for 11+

My son used to use mymaths at their old school, and we really liked it.

Thursday is autism awareness day (all week is autism awareness week) this would be a great time to do a few activities about how we're all different and how we can help other people who need a little extra help. there is a great Elmo episode that tackles the subject of autism beautifully. the puzzle piece represents how everyone has a place where we fit in and this is no different for us with autism 🧩
