Its honey AGAIN, she still has the URI and is still on anti biotics, I went to give her the anti biotics this morning and there was a couple of drops of what looked like blood in their little bed room area. I checked toffee and she was fine, when I checked Honeys butt it was dirty because her poos have been runnyer then normal, i cant do anything about it now because I got to go to college. This probably sounds stupid but do you think shes pooing blood, this doesn't sounds good could she be bleeding internally?! :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

This is really worrying. As soon as you get home I would be taking her straight to the vet. let us know how you get on. xx

Oh no, this poor little piggy :'( :'(
I hope you've been able to make a vets appointment as it sound imperative that you get her to the vets love, this is something the vets can check easily O0
All paws crossed for her :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

just got back from college and checked on her, theres no more signs of blood, I tryed to clean her butt but she really didnt like it so I gave up cause I dont want to stress her out in her condition, one of her back pads look sore so I think this could have been what bled, just waiting for mum to come home from work it about half an hour.

hoping all goes well at the vets with honey. hopefully he will give honey some probiotics to help with her runny poops as i know how hard they can be to get them back to normal. sending hugs and healing vibes your way. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-*

I hope she's ok :( what antibiotic is she on? if its baytril and its been more than two weeks i'd be asking for septrin, its much more effective for URIs. fingers crossed for her x

Yeah she is on baytril, didnt go to the vets on the end, mum came home and looked at her she seemed fine no more blood, kept an eye on her for ages still no more blood, she is eating and although I havent seen her drink she is getting fluids from the veg and fresh grass. I'm still not sure what the blood was but it hasnt happened again.

I'm really upset and it sounds really bad to say this but I think its coming to the time where I might have to let go and have her PTS. :'( :'( :'(
Although shes eating, its not enough, her breathing has been bad for sooooooooo long, shes not as active and her weight it dropping, when I weighed her saturday she was just under 2 pounds i think its dropped more since then. I dont think its fair to her anymore to keep her like this anymore watching her makes me want to cry, my mum said to leave it a bit longer :'( :'( :'(

Dont give up, shes only been on baytril which we know doesnt work on URI's very well. My pig went from 1100g to 750g, his breathing was terrible, i thought he'd die but didnt give up and got septrin off the vet. he was better within a few weeks. Its not fair to keep her ill but its no fair to give up on her before you've tried every option either. Please ask the vet for septrin, dont keep her in pain when the baytril isnt working, and dont have her pts before you try septrin you would regret it, she has every chance of survival. x

I would definately ask for a change of antibiotic and take her back to the vets. It's always worth trying a more than one thing to help your guinea. Some guineas respond differently to some drugs than others. Try and keep thinking positive and let us know how you get on at the vets xx

my mum called the vet today and asked about the septrin,it didnt sound like they knew that much about it, I'm in the channel islands. The vet said he was going to look it up or something 2morrow and if I need it he will have to order it (hopefully not 2 expensive or there goes al my birthday money lol :-\ but ill do what I can for my little honey bunny :D) He said he' will call back tomorrow evening.

I also spoke to my gran today and I told her about the first vet I went to, she said that she really hates that vet and she was really rude to her once when she took her cat. I have now changed vets and he is the one willing to look this up for me, so hopefully this time it will all go better. x x x

i agree with the others, while honey is still eating i would keep going with her, i wouldn't give up on her. perhaps maryh's vet could help you as she emails, rings vets all over the world to help them with guinea pigs. sending you and honey hugs and healing vibes and hoping she gets better real soon, hoping she is on a probiotic to protect her tummy from the antibiotics. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: come on honey hang in there and get better O0

thats really good O0 my vets had to do a bit of research on it for pigs because it isnt licensed for them but if the baytril isnt working its well worth a try. Really hope he can get it in for her and it works x

Do you give her that through the mouth cause as far as I know I havent been given or offered any? Is this really bad!? :o

antibiotics kill the bad and good bugs in the tummy which can cause upset tummies and soft poops. until january this year never knew they exsisted either. what i did with mine which was called protexin was mix one gram of powder to 1 litre of preboiled water. i put some into zoe's water bottle and also syringe fed her some 4-6 times a day. if honey is still eating and her poops are alright then i would just ask the vets tomorrow when he rings, many UK people use bio lapis as a probiotic, think you can also buy probiotics on line. good luck to you and honey sending hugs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I think you make it up with water and syringe it to her but I'm not 100% sure. I think a vet I went to before once when Ginger had a bad belly gave her an injection? I've only really found about probiotics from this forum. It protects their tummy when they are taking antibiotics because antibiotics can kill of the good bacteria in their tummies which the probiotic either protects or replaces (not sure which one sorry) There are a lot of other people on here who are more knowledgable about them than me.

Thank you, ill let you know how it goes when the vet calls which hopefully he will remeber to he seemed quite nice on the phone.

are they expensive? really annoyed we are so limited for things over here!

She had an injection from the first vet we went to that was a while ago though and not sure what it was.

I don't think they are very expensive. Some vets give them in with the price of antibiotics.

for two packets of protexin here in south oz were $7.95 which equals 3.88862 GBP according to the XE currency converter. know what you mean about vets and limited, our vets are limited in their knowledge of guinea pigs as they aren't trained in guinea pigs when training to be a vet. and sadly many people here in oz find it is cheaper to replace a guinea pig than fixing a sick one. :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: good luck O0

yh i no what you mean, people are sooooo cruel :'( I love my guinea pigs to bits! they all have their own personallities. Honey was really chatty and first up to the hutch door, thats what makes it harder to see her like this now she quiet and plods about slowly :'( :'( :'(

I know that feeling only too well - Ginger now an oap and wobbling around with her arthritis is hard to see sometimes when I think how she used to have a little run outside in the summertime. I just give her extratlc - hugs, kisses and baths and I think she appreciates it when she starts chattering to me when she is being washed :) Just keep doing what you're doing and hopefully the septrin will work wonders for little honey xx

as you are both off line ginger is 8 years old and a grand elderly lady she is. i know rw3399 has taken her to many vets and all they have said is pts cause of her age. which makes me so :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: sending hugs to ginger and honey :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

weighed honey 2day she is 1 pound and 11oz which I think in g is 503g but dont quote me on that cause I'm not sure. What upsets me is she is eating, the weight just doesnt stick. This morning I syringed her some water she seemed to take it alright and then i soaked some of her pellets so they were soft, she seems to like them like that so i left her munching on a bowl of them. Shes really trying to fight it because shes not starving herself like some guinea pig websites so that they do when they lose hope, its just her weight is worrying me.

Waiting for vet phone call 2 night. x :P

Don worry, she'll be losing weight fighting the infection. You could get some critical care in or science selective to syringe her to help her a bit? Fingers crossed the vet gets septrin :) x

I worry about Ginger's weight too - she is only 600g and very skinny although she does eat quite a bit (not as muh as she used to though). The vet never mentioned her bein underweight or that it was a problem so it's probably the arthiritis that has caused the muscle wastage. Like you said it is positive that she is still eating and she is taking water from which are really positive signs xx

little update on the vet situation, he called and told my mum that the septrin was a human auti biotic and that he wouldnt advise giving it to the guinea pig. :-\

Just been syringing more water to honey

blimey, i didn't know that. I wonder if my vet would give it to me if it was needed :-\ or would refuse on the basis it's a human antibiotic

Yeah I had never heard of it either, a couple of people I think menchoned septrin on this forum, but if it is ok for g pigs then why havent any of the three vets Ive been to offered it to me, and the third new nice vet looked it up :-\ can guinea pigs be given human medication? (dont think they can but just wandered) :D

I looked it up and it can be refered to as tribrissin. as far as i can see this is clearly used for dogs and horses. Perhaps what others vets do it give a very dilute/weak version. It may not be licenced for use in cavies which is why some vets may not know about it. However, just because some things aren't licenced, doesn't mean they can't be used
