I have taken on an elderly grey Rex boar called Foggy x) he is adorable but has an ermm embarrassing problem! His bum was impacted (he is neutered) we cleaned it out as per instructed with cotton wool buds and olive oil and he has had not been bad at all as long as we do this everyday, (his poo does back up inside him and tend to rush out) but the smell is indescribable! :(He has this awful cheese type stuff that oozes out of his inside bum - its like loads of pustules that you can squeeze it out of! :...:... What IS it? And is it normal? Is it just boar 'glue' or is it a possible infection? He happily lies on his back being fed dandelions while we do this to him poor boy! He is very lazy and doesn't come out of his fleece bag much, he has a girlfriend Marigold who I feel sorry for as she has to put up with his pong! :red

Ps Foggy because he has lost his squeak - it comes out like he has smoked 40 a day all his life!)

Oh bless him :(. Doesn't sound very pleasant poor boy. It may be worth a vet visit...I don't know, I've never had to deal with an impacted boar. My only one is only 2 years old so I hopefully have a few more years till I have to start helping him!

I hope Foggy is ok.

We occasionally had the same problem with one of our boys, ( yes the smell, seems to stick to you )
Having to clean it everyday does seem excessive though. What kind of bedding do you use, when we used wood-shavings, Gromit ( RIP ) used to eat them, causing the impaction problem. Also we were not sure he was getting enough water either, so we started giving him some more water based foods like cucumber, a combination of changing their bedding and giving more water based foods worked for us. But as stated initially every day does seem excessive, maybe your best bet would be a quick visit to the vet to check his plumbing.

Hi - we use megazorb for bedding, he has come from the rescue and has had a pretty poor life being used for breeding prior and he had a very poor diet. He doesn't seem to drink a lot no... Good idea to try more cucumber then. I put him on the grass as much as possible but he just lazes in his bed! He does really eat every pellet I give him though, maybe I should cut down on those? He gets unlimited hay but tends to leave it. Maybe a vet visit is needed then..

Here is a pigture of the two of them - how adorable? x)x)x)x)

Try and encourage him to move around a bit more, as lying around all day will contribute to the impaction.

I notice a big increase in poops when my boys are in the playpen running around. The movement of them running around helps to keep things moving. :(|)

Are his joints ok? Just wondering if hes being lazy or if he's got joint problems.

Aww poor thing. I took my boar to the vet as he cannot really week and the vet said it is down to his age.

I have an old boar that I have to check for impaction everyday too. It makes a massive difference to him if he runs around lots as he can sometimes free himself up that way. Plenty of exercise plenty of hay.
