I had a new arrival in the rescue this evening called Babs. No idea of her age but her front right foot is inflamed. Not certain what it is but she's booked into the vets for tomorrow morning. She also has what looks like a polyp on her ear. Only thing I can think for her foot is bumblefoot but never dealt with it before, any ideas x

Ouch that does look like Bumblefoot, I always treat with a steroid cream called Zymox so maybe ask your vet about that? I would also get the vet to check the heart as Bumblefoot can be linked to circulatory issues. My Nigel had it. Am afraid I don't know much about Polyps.

Let us know how they get on Stewy. Nice to see you around the forum too :)

I took Babs to the vets & Dominika is more bothered about her overall condition ie skin & bones. She's taken an xray of her foot & two of her toes have lost bone through calcification, there's nothing in the middle. She's going to enail me a copy of the xray when she has time. At worst Babs may have to have part of these 2 toes removed but Dominika wants to see what she's like after been on a weight building diet so I'm taking her back on October 6th. Dominika has observed her walking about & she said their seems to be no sign of pain so no need to give her pain killers for the time being. It does seem to be something she's had for a long time & she thinks that she could be as old as 5 or 6 years. If that's the case then once she's done 2 weeks quarantine I'll see about getting her bonded with Faith (no eyes) & her mother Hope our sanctuary piggies :) x

Thanks for the update, sending lots of love to Babs. Keep us updated bud

I'm giving her plenty of food at the moment including hay, excel nuggets, readigrass, alfalfa hay & of veggies. Previous owner was only feeding her on veggies, no sign of hay in her hutch :) x

Oh the poor little sausage. That just brought tears to my eyes. Thank god she gets to live out the rest of her days in comfort and happiness while getting all the care she deserves. Well done Stewy! x

:( Awful, its a wonder she doesn't have digestion and teeth issues.

She must be loving being with you

I was worried bout her teeth but she's eating everything OK. I'll ask Dominika to look at them when I'm there in just under 3 weeks time :)

Oh! Poor babs! Just a thought, not sure what bedding she is on at the moment. But might be worth putting her on soft bedding (fleece, vetbed, towels) as this will help her feet. Nothing to poke into her pads or cause irritation. Is she walking ok? Was she in dirty conditions before handed in to you?
As Helen said bumblefoot can be a sign of heart/circulation problems. Also unsanitary housing or bare wire cage flooring can cause cuts or injuries that break the skin letting infection in.

Sorry I can offer no advice on the polyp though never had any experience with them.

Hope she gets on ok though &I'm sure you'll get her back to a reasonable weight.
Bet she's loving your TLC :luv:
Xx

Yes, she's walking fine. I get some really nice hay that is very soft almost like wool so that on top of puppy pads I think will be best for her especially as she needs to eat as much as possible. I got her x-ray from the vets & you'll see the infected are where the bone has gone on the 2nd toe from left x

Oh poor old girl. People are so ignorant. I'm so glad she's going to have a loving home for life

Oh my :( Did her previous owner not get her to a vet Stewy? I wish I lived nearer I'd be around to help feed her up & maybe put a pignapping jacket on ;) x

Poor girly - my Bumble is at the moment being treated for bumblefoot (seems I named him well) all 4 feet are bandaged up and he is on a special cream used for burns victims and some hideously expensive padded dressing under the elastaplast- and on a month long course of antibiotics - but it's working - even my vet had one of her own guinea pigs get it anddshe has treated many cases over the years - so if bumblefoot does develop on her there are many more ways of treating it today - good luck to the little old lady.

To sanitise, reduce swelling and improve curculation, try warm foot baths with salty water. We personally are big fans of potassium permanganate (after it's oxidised to brown, it is further usable as a potassium supplement in the garden :) ). Works for both cavy and human, has a side-effect of brown staining. Regular applications also draw out any pus (if, God forbid, it's there).
If you don't have that particular salt, table salt will do. I've even heard people use Epsom salt...

Poor girlie (love her name though!) when one of my rescue piggies had bumblefoot she didn't appear to be in pain but metacam really helped reduce the swelling and inflammation. As her general condition improves you should find her foot will improve as she is able to fight the infection x
