When it rains it pours.

My special needs boy has been recovering slowly from a corneal ulcer on his left eye and now his right eye is balding underneath and he has all these white dander flecks on his hair shafts. He has chronic middle ear infection (otitis media) that has been at bay for some time now, so he has always had a bit of gunk- which made it easy for me to not think much of it last week.
But now it’s very noticeable and I’m concerned.
Waiting for our vet to respond, but curious if anyone has any thoughts on here in the meantime?
It’s been a rough year health wise for my babies, and it feels like every time one thing starts to look up, the other shoe drops. Feeling defeated, but also worried for my baby and hoping someone has an idea of what could be going on?
Thank you in advance for your time!

I’ve posted two photos of each side of his face for comparison.

Morning I have no experience at all sorry but sending your boy healing vibes. I'm sure someone will be on here soon with some great advise 💐

Oh bless him and you too. Sending hugs and healing vibes.

Have you noticed him rubbing that eye? He could be rubbing the hair away himself because he’s uncomfortable. I hope your vet can help. Good luck.

Hi

It looks like there is some discomfort in the eye, which is leading to the excretion of tear fluid (in guinea pigs a sign of an irritation or pain in the eye). It dries into a transparent crust.
The eye cleaning fluid is milky and is usually reabsorbed by the the tear duct.
Signs of Pain in Guinea Pigs

I would recommend to see a vet if this continues; something could be stuck under a lid. The hairs around the eye have been flattened by the fluid; don't worry about that.

Thank you for the response! I forgot to add this photo to the original post, but this is the hair loss that’s happening when cleaning around his eye. I put my light-up magnification goggles on and cannot find anything in his eye, but doesn’t mean there isn’t a scratch in there that I’m not seeing.

Our vet emailed back and said to try antibiotic drops since we have been treating his other eye for the healing ulcer.
Just weird because his ulcerated left eye never had hair loss like this, even at its worst.

A hopeful update:
After his afternoon eye flush- still nothing… but when I applied the terramycin antibiotic, the ointment must’ve helped the tiniest microscopic fleck of hay find its way to the corner, and it’s out! Barely could see it with the naked eye.
His eye is bright and dry again!
I will continue to monitor and have a follow up appt w optometrist, as well as primary vet soon anyway, but thought I’d share the positive news!

So thankful for this forum. It’s beyond helpful having community support with other lovers of the sweetest creatures on earth.
