We had a new year's eve party, and the majority of the party took place in the basement where the pigs live (finished basement and they get plenty of free range time and interaction). Well one of our guests made a comment to a good friend of mine about "why would they keep the pigs in a room where people hang out" because of the "smell." Not only did I do a full blown cage clean before the party, but I never let it get to a point where the cage is so bad that it does smell bad! But what made me even more angry was that she acted like the pigs aren't good enough to be around people! I get so sick of the "they're just rodents" attitude. Especially in my own house. I tried not to let it bother me, but the more I think about it, the more mad I get. I don't really like cats (or her husband for that matter!) but I don't go to her house and talk bad about her cats or husband!

I know what you mean.My piggies have their own room downstairs and when my sister brought her friend round the friend said that it just want right.Have hamsters and gerbils in the living room and she said I wasn't right in the head.I just ignored her

I get people asking me 'why would you even want those things' or (against my hamster) 'he looks like a rat eww'. First of all these people sound like adolescents (they're not) and second rats are cute and I actually want a rat too. My guineapigs are my little babies and I love them dearly! They have they own personalities and are much friendlier then them :/
People try to insult my pigs but I would rather live in a world full of piggies than in a world with them.

I understand how you feel. I have had very negative comments from people. My mum thinks my place is dirty as there will be pieces of hay somewhere. Hay is not dirt! We are lucky we know how wonderful piggies are and the joy they bring.

I also know how everyone feels my own family, are overjoyed when I tell them if any my boys go to the rainbow bridge, i get to the point i do not tell them, i am lucky to have wonderful neighbours, they all love my piggies, and now my family have a new thing to moan about, my boarding service.

i love all animals, and so take great offence to people that insult them.

My house, my animals, my rules.... you don't like them then don't come round!

I am generally of the opinion that if you don't accept me for who I am, pigs, turtle, falconry, untidiness, and various other annoying habits included then I don't need you to be my friend. I only want people around who actually care about me, my life and it's many facets.

I know not everyone is an animal person but that doesn't mean you need to be rude about someone who is. My in-laws don't understand the guinea pig thing at all but always dutifully ask after them when we see them and were suitably sympathetic when Suilvy died recently. They don't understand it but they know it meant a lot to us so they accept that and accommodate that. I can totally see why you are annoyed. I would be too!

Anyone who was as rude as the people described would not be asked back to my house.

I have had the same with my love of rodents in general with people saying things, really annoys me. You get so used to interacting with your pets and creating a bond with them that you do know what they do and don't like. I used to say 'look how much the hamsters likes that' or 'you can tell shes happy' and some of my friends would be like you cant even see a change, it looks the same, it cant express happiness, why don't you get porper animals like dogs and cats?... blah blah blah just shush or go home lol.

Urgh I hate the whole "oh they are rodents, and they are dirty and smelly" PFFT! Kept properly they aren't, and they are wonderful creatures. Just like my dog, Gi comes up to me when I come home and starts squeaking for his cucumber! He is kept in my bedroom, spot cleaned everyday and yesterday he was spot cleaned three times because he wouldn't stop messing things up like ripping the newspaper! So I don't smell anything in my room :S And if anyone made a comment like that to me, then they'd get a mouthful back. People these days! Get me so mad when it comes to animals! :mal:
