They are saying they are being dumped becaiuse of the credit crunch! I don't think so! Besides petrol how many of us animal lovers have been affected by it as yet? it's an excuse and it isn't a valid reason!

sorry louise but i am going to have to disagree with you on this one, look at how emma (jom) was working so many hours to feed her piggies. i know for me and OH being on pensions everything is rising but the pension. things are damn tough and prices have gone up because of the petrol. a stick of celery here in south oz is $6.99 nearly 3 and a half pounds and the ox bow pellets is $34.95 here nearly 18 pounds, because of the drought straw and hay have gone up too. things for us like milk, bread, meat, potatoes to name some have gone up. phone, power and gas have also gone up, i think in time people here on the forum will be affected too. something has to give, i know of people here in south oz that are on pensions and they eat canned cat food as it is all they can afford to buy. i will admit some pets would be dumped as the novelty has worn off or pet was a unwanted present but i would honestly say more than half would be dumped cause of the economy and the struggle just to survive. am really hoping that most if not all of the fur babies find homes, i know before when we had dogs and more cats we borrowed money and got credit cards and ended up owing nearly 50 thousand dollars due to vet bills, cost of living, car repairs etc that is nearly 25 thousand pounds. now we are on a debt agreement where we are paying for our debts but no interest. sorry to be the thread doom slayer again but i can only see things get worse before they get better. which is why it is more than ever important to get animals desexed and STOP the breeding O0 the proposed laws won't make a difference as they will be too hard and expensive to enforce. sorry if i have upset or offended people, this is what is happening is south oz, can't say for anywhere else, i thank you and will now hop down from my soap box. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

(Just noticed another post come in since yours but I'll post this anyway)

Goodness …are animal lovers exempt from most of the unbelievable hikes in:-
Animal food prices (inc. bedding)
Human food prices
Home fuel bills
House/car insurance
…to name just the easy ones
I can understand a family with children and one income being at their wits end wondering what else they can do to economise. Obviously they should come and live where you do!

What I am saying is the article says the animals have been neglected due to the credit crunch, I don't buy that. If you loved your animal you would seek proper shelter for it if times were tough. I'm not saying animal lovers are excempt where did I say that? What I am saying is using it as an excuse to dump animals is irresponsbible. Juniper you have twisted my post! I have children and I am a full time mum my partner works full time so I know about living on the breadline but I wouldn't dump my animals for anything, you seek proper refuge you don't just dump them where you feel like!

The prices of animal feed etc. have gone up loads recently - my mum had to get me a sack of food last week when I wasn't well and paid £12.90 for a sack that usually costs me £7! Of course I'm not going to get rid of my animals because of it - but it does mean every month I am struggling to make the money last the month - and I'm pretty well paid!

I think if times are hard and people are struggling to feed their families and pay their bills, pets will be the first to go - especially larger pets like dogs that cost more per month, but small animals too - not everyone feels the same about our pets as we do, sadly. They are very disposable in today's society

Agree Sophie. Petrol is the worst here but being on a shoestring budget I do shop around for bargins. Some things for us have increased like eggs and bread but veg will I can't grumble with Lidl and i get my greens from Tesco's.The only problem being is that many shops are far away from me so I have to drive there and that means more petrol.

I've so no increase in pellets or hay I guess it will come in time. :)

Hasn't Norfolk been one of the worst counties affected by the credit crunch?
I saw on the news something like 75,000 people are waiting for coucil homes. I suppose people are having to get rid of their pets now, because they just can't afford them. I think a lot of the time the Guinea Pig(s) and Rabbit(s) are the ones to go first because they are 'little' unlike the dog. I think Guinea Pig and Rabbit rescues are getting the worst of it! :(

Must be Sophie as I've up to now we've had no real problems here. Perhaps because I do shop around I'm just not seeing it other than with petrol prices. :)

I'm not sure about the credit crunch being responsible for an increase in abandoned animals,i've worked closely witesth various charities for many years and animals have always been abandoned for various reasons-domestic circumstances, relationship breakdown, novelty factor wears off & just the plain ignorant "owners" who no longer want the animal.I once heard of a family trying to rehome a cat...because "it didn't fit in with the decor of their house". 98)

Maybe it's just me ? I think while their are people out their breeding & "supplying the demand"(for want of a better phrase) their will always be the public who get the animal on impulse then when the novelty wears off & it starts costing time & money thats when the animal gets dumped or neglected.
Apologies if I offend anyone with this ,it's not my intention but I've heard all the excuses under the sun & seen the consequence to the animal & it gets me ranting everytime...feel better now I got that off my chest... :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I agree Woody! I do think we are now living in a society were the credit crunch will be blamed for every little thing.

Oh i've broke a finger nail, it's the credit crunch! ;D

Yes louise a finger nail is bad
x

we shop around and only buy what we need, just tightened our strings a bit

But our animals and my family are not suffering in a bad way...we are just using our heads...

xx

Same here Julie. I love bargain hunting as well! My Nan would walk miles to save a 1p! ;D

I noticed it said that half of all animals abandoned are cats - my 2 cats are only slightly more expensive to keep than the guinea pigs and thats including the insurance that I pay for them.

If you really love your pets you would do anything for them and keep them - there are plenty shops do offers on food etc. I shop around when its time for buying stuff for them to make sure I'm getting loads for my money as sometimes it can be a little tough with money but thats the commitment I made when I took the cats/guinea pigs on.

Well yeah some of it is because people can't be bothered and using that excuse, but IMO I think a lot of it is the credit crunch.

What she said ^^ ;D

I saw about this on the News last week. I am by far a well of person (laughs) but I manage to put and get what my furries need, I get food by the sack, etc, etc and I shop around. My Dad's dog Sue Sue often has more than my Dad, she has plenty of food and gets what she needs etc O0

Yes the credit crunch has made it harder and people are having to shop around and maybe not get all the luxury items they are used too, but you cant blame that for dumping animals, even if you were so skint you couldnt take care of your pets you would take them to a rescue and not dump them on the road etc and I'm sure some one could afford £1 for a bag of hay until a rescue had space 98) 98) 98)

I know alot of us keep money set aside for our pets so if we did have a hard month or couple of months we would be able to scrape by :)

Would people please say what country you are living in before writing a reply. I am lost with some replies.

Well, I know this thread is not about what to do with animal abusers but we had a very affective way of dealing with them 500 hundred years ago.

Anders :)

Agree Kel! The good thing is Hay is the main source and you can get a cheap bag for £1.50 if things were so bad for a couple of days as long as they have that and some veg they'll get by. They shouldn't have to though, a couple of times I've run short because they give me those big guinea eyes look all cute and I give in and give them more than I should! ;D

Oh and I'm in the hell hole that is Liverpool! ;D Just kidding, living up to the sterotype! :P

Not to mention grass and dandies which are FREE! if you go to a supermarket at the right time (evening) then they have bits and pieces for 10p, round here we can get a brilliant bag of 1kg hay for £1 in most shops :) I know vet bills can be expensive but you should think about that before you get a pet.

In my opinion most of these pets which are being 'dumped' are because stupid people get an impulse to buy a kid a pet, and when the kid gets bored they cant be bothered looking after it. Or another example is when people dont realise male+female=BABIES! (yes i know its shocking but thats biology) which they cant find homes for!!

Oooh woops I thought they mean't being taken on rescues, not dumped outside. Sorry :)

ROFL Yep its like oh we'll block the biology lesson from our minds! The worst is leaving kids to care for animals. As you know the pigs are the girls but I do everything for them how could i leave it to a 7 and 3 year old! 98)

Emily picks dandys though and I think she will take over when she is older give me a break, but I really enjoy it. I must be mad! ;D

Our hay is £1 a bag so they would never be short, megan helps me with all the piggies, she loves giving ther bowls of veg....she also each night b4 bed gets a diff piggy out and they have one to one with her in doors and sometimes, cheeky moo has them in her bedroom.....she is good and only 7

I think this misunderstanding is what some comments are about... We should agree on terminology :)

Dumping - to abandon the animal somewhere on its own

Surrendering - to hand the animal into a rescue

When people then start saying "and they just dump the animal at the rescue" it gets confusing ;D Yes some people literally "dump" their animal at rescues, by going in and saying there you go, have it, I dont care if you have the space or not, if you dont take it I will let the animal run loose in the car park and drive off" but if we could try not to use the word dump when meaning "surrender" that would be helpful :)

I agree. For me surrendering means that an owner has thought long and hard about giving up a pet and has the best interests at heart.

Dumping for me is done by people who just don't give a damn and to me are the lowest of the low. Just can't get my head around that at all! 98)

but then we have to come up with a new word!

surrendering for those who have no choice but give up the animal to a rescue, dumping if the animal is abandoned (eg piggy left in cardboard box in carpark), and a new word for people who give the animal to a rescue but only out of "cant be bothered" attitude.

What exactly we should call this I do not know.. suggestions, anyone?
