So, at the supermarket yesterday, I found a container of pre-diced green peppers and I thought, "ooh, the guys will love these." So I gave them some. When I was putting it away, I got a good whiff of said peppers--they smelled like salsa. Thinking they were seasoned or something, I panicked and had my boyfriend smell...turns out they're jalapeños. So we run back to the piggie house and they were going WILD. The peppers were gone without me having a chance to remove them, and the piggies were wheeling and popcorning and chasing each other around having a ball...I'm reluctant to give them more until I have some feedback as to whether or not hot peppers are OK for them, but they seemed to really enjoy them.

Your thoughts?

I think only bell peppers are suitable for piggy consumption, I would imagine that jalapeños are way to spicy for them and might make them poorly. Looking up online it also says they're not supposed to have jalapeños as it could upset their digestive system, so I'd suggest sticking to bell peppers :P

Maybe keep an eye on them to make sure they're not poorly, I hope not though! :)

:yikes: i would stick to bell peppers as it would have the same effect as a Phall curry would have on us, they cant get rid of it after they have swallowed the peppers so its wait for the firey excretions out the other end i'm afraid- probably a dodgy stomach for a day or so me thinks! :eek:xx

For the record - Chilli peppers , jalapeño peppers , or any other hot peppers are NOT OK for Guinea Pigs .

I know the people on this thread are adding humour to their posts - BUT , I don't want people to get the wrong idea .

Thanks piggyowner. I was nervous about it once I realized what the peppers were and how hyper they were acting.

Oh gosh! Bless them bet their mouths were on fire! But yes definitely not spicy peppers I hope their little bottoms aren't feeling the effects too much today!

Apparently rats cannot taste capsaicin. However that's rats, not piggies, so I don't know whether it's a general rodent thing or not. However I wouldn't want to trust spicy peppers even if the pigs can't taste the spice, just in case the capsaicin affects their stomachs long-term. xx

Easy mistake, some look so similar! I've just come back from Budapest and certainly saw a lot of new veg I'd have to google first! ;)
