hey guys,can any of you help me out and tel me if i could introduce a new guinea pig to my 2 and a half year old guy?i regret ever taking him on his own because i always think hes lonely and sad and would love a friend but iv been told its 2 late that hes probably quite terretorial and they would not get along?is this true?hes such a quite boy,he doesnt play,he just sits around and eats,id hate to think hes unhappy,advice greatly appreciated =)

It's not something I have experience of myself, last year I got a young pig to pair up with my Bailey who was 4 at the time but when I checked the sex again using the internet as reference I realised I'd got a girl. I didn't want to risk neutering due to his age, so I had their cages next to each other.

You can try a young piggy and your boar may want to look after him, or some rescues may let you take him along for boar dating to see which he gets on best with. Not sure how many small animal rescues there are in Ireland though?

Thanks alot.There are no smal animal rescue's in ireland to my knowledge which disappoints me so i could not do that but do * think he would like to take care of a very young piggy or be put out by a new addition?i dont want to breed them so if i got a girl id av2 seperate them but i have heard a new boy would make him angry and terretorial.would another piggy in a cage beside him be companionship enough?i just really really hate to think hes lonely and sad,it upsets me and iv watched many guinea pig video's on youtube that present them to be quite playful and happy but my Harlow just sits around,eats,sleeps,doesnt do much,i hope he isnt depressed or else i would get depressed =(

There's plenty of people that have introduced youngsters to older boars with no problems, hopefully they'll be along in the morning :)

I know with 2 boars a larger cage is recommended 4 x 2' minimum but bigger if possible

It's best to introduce on neutral ground (bath tub?) and then make sure when put in the cage/hutch if it's been used by your boar previously make sure it's throughly cleaned so that none of his scent is on it.

Once you have introduced don't seperate again unless blood is drawn.

Hi and welcome :)
I've never had to do this i'm sorry :{
I'm hoping one of our Irish friends might be able to help you with a suggestion where you could perhaps get Harlow (handsome name x)) to pick his own friend
Good luck :)

I have introduced quite a few pairs/ groups of piggies. Most did get on, I've only had one pair I have to permenately seperate.

I recently wrote an article on this, still need to sort out typos, rolleyes, but it might help you.

You must be prepared for the possiblity that they wont get on, or fall out at some point so would need to have two cages.
