Hi
We are looking to introduce a baby male guinea pig to our 2 un-neutered males. They are 1 year old and inseparable friendly brothers.
This will coincide with the purchase of a new larger cage.
What are your views on if and how this would be best tackled?
Also what are the general opinions on a 2 tiered cage?

Thank You:)

It is not advisable to have three boars living together. They rarely get along. I would strongly advice you just to keep your two boars and not try to introduce another one.

With regards to cages I think c and c cages are the best kind as they give pigies lots more space. :)

If you have a stable and devoted pair pair of boars, please don't spoil it!

If things go really pear shaped, you can end up with three single boars refusing to live with each other; most likely you will have to separate one them once the youngster hits the big hormones! Three piggies usually end up with an outsider problem of some sort or other, much more often than not.
Have a look round our behaviour section if you wish; it is littered with boar trios running into trouble!

If you really want more piggies, please get another pair to keep separately. If you would consider rehoming a bonded pair from a reputable guinea pig rescue, you'd run far less of a problem of fall outs and have a place you can always turn to.

Pretty clear advice from you both-Thank You-much appreciated
The idea was for a birthday present for my daughter who adores her pigs and is animal mad.She is not really interested in anything else.
Would introducing a small rabbit be running into the same kind of problem?

It's not advisable to keep guinea pigs and rabbit together. Rabbits can injure piggies and also carry a bacteria that can affect the respiratory tract of guinea pigs.
If your piggies are living harmoniously it's best not to shake it up. Don't break what's not broken and all that.
How about taking your daughter to get some new toys for her pigs? I know it's not really a present for her but I'm sure she'll feel like it is :))

We got three boars and they have ended up as a pair and a single due to a falling out between two of them. I would definately not get three again and stick to one pair. Hoping to get the single boar neuted in the new year so that he can go boar dating.

My boy was a rescue from a trio of boys, the other 2 beat him up, you have already been given the advice I would give xx

Rabbits and guinea pigs living together is no longer recommended - they have very different dietary needs. Rabbits also should ideally be kept in (neutered) cross gender couples.

I am very sorry to spoil your fun!

PS: Our guinea pig rescues are all full to bursting with unwanted guinea pigs at the moment now the summer holidays are over and the interest in the new pets has waned. Perhaps your daughter could sponsor one that is in a bad state and follow its story?

The rescue sponser sounds great
Can you send me a link please
Thanks again

Depends where you are!

Furryfriends on here is looking after guinea pigs with serious and long term dental problems; she's worked miracles with several piggies and has turned their lives completely around!

Or do a search under "Kevin" if you want an example of a miracle piggy.

Suzygpr in South Wales is currently very much running over the limit with lots of (pregnant) piggies having been rescued over the last few weeks.

Cavy Corner Sanctuary in Doncaster run a sponsor scheme as well.

Other active "forum rescues" are Bramley in Leeds, Milhaven in Keighley, BARC in Barnsley, The Potteries in Stoke-on-Trent, RSPCA Walsall in Birmingham, Crawley GP Rescue in Sussex, Cardiff GP Rescue - those are the ones that post most regularly on here. There are more rescue that may be more local to you.
