Hi! I’m getting another guinea pig soon, he’ll be under 6 months. My question is, is alfalfa hay/pellets necessary or more so an optional thing. Are there any vegetables that can substitute for alfalfa? Thank you!
Thank you for letting me know! And right now I have one male piggy. I am taking him to a rescue, where we’ll try and pair him up with the best companion for him. Also, I’ll have another cage at home in case they need to be separatedNo alfalfa should not be given. It’s too high in calcium.
You don’t need to substitute anything. Just feed a normal hay based diet, with one cup of veg per day (but this needs to be introduced slowly if piggy is not used to veg) and one tablespoon of normal pellets.
As a side note, I note to you say ‘he’. Do you already have other Male piggies? Boars can only be kept in pairs so if you already have two boars living together, then adding a third is a recipe for disaster
Thank you for answering! No it’s not. They’re okay to eat normal pellets. The issue would be how you can stop the older piggies from eating it. It’s high in calcium. I got my boars when they were..two months old. I never fed them alfalfa based pellets or hay and they’re okay.
