Is backyard grass safe?

We use no chemicals on our lawn or garden.

I have built a little pigpen for them to run around in outside. Is that grass okay for them to munch on?

Yes, it is. Provided that you haven't got a dog running around on it, as dog pee is poisonous for guinea pigs!

In this case, it is better to fence off an area for the piggies where the dogs can go.

Please make sure that the grass is not too cold or wet when you put indoors guinea pigs out and that they have a safe run with ample shade and protection for heat and wind. Any run also needs to be protected against cats and birds of prey.

I do the bare foot grass test - if my bare feet are comfy on the grass, the piggies will, too!

Definitely. Just make sure if you have dogs that they don't pee/poop on the grass. If you really want you can wash the grass just in case.

Yeh it is safe, and I'm sure they'll love it, grass is guineas' favourite food! Just make sure they are well protected from the sun, and they'll need a good cover to protect them from predators if you plan to leave them out there unsupervised.

Thanks everyone! We will for sure get them a nice shaded area. Thanks for the dog tip! We don't own any but you never know with stray animals. I'll just wash a section =)

Just been reading this thread and noticed that dogs wee is poisonous to piggies, does anyone know what the symptoms would be if pigs did eat grass that a dog had pee'd on please?

I'd also make sure not to mow the section of the lawn you put them on, or if you do don't put them out for a few days afterwards so you can be sure there are no cuttings left on the grass.

Yeah my dog does too, although I do try to put the pigs out on a patch that I've had the run on for a few days so it has no fresh pee on it.

I had a pig pass away a couple of weeks ago and her symptoms started after being out on the grass the day before, although she had been out on the grass many many times before that and had been fine!

I suddenly got worried that it might have been pee'd on grass that made her ill, although the vet said he felt it was a tumour..... never the less paranoia set in and I'm now worried to put them out on the grass! :{
