My guinea pig has been slowing down for about 6 months now, it’s gotten to the point that pain meds aren’t even helping. He will no longer eat for himself and looks awful. On December 20th he weighed in at around 900g, this morning he is at 710g despite syringe feeding. I think I have to make the decision to let him go, something must be seriously wrong for him to be starving himself.

Sorry to hear this, its a tough decision and maybe you should talk this over with the vet, but if he is old and failing and in pain and can't eat for himself and the vet cant offer any treatment that will help him then maybe its the kindest thing to help him go peacefully x

So sorry to hear this. I think a discussion with your vet is the way to go. He is not starving himself by choice, there will be a reason. See what your vet says and take it from there

So sorry that you are in this situation.
I agree that a conversation with your vet is needed.
You will also know in your heart what the right decision will be.
Holding you in my heart

He is 6 years and 2 months old ish, came from pets at home as a baby so his breeding is probably terrible. He is severe arthritis, bald spots where he has barbered his own hair off, long term snuffles, cauliflower willy and his little feet and ears feel freezing so I think his body must be shutting down

I am sorry to hear this. I definitely think it would be a good idea to get him to a vet. Depending on the vet’s opinion of the prognosis, it may be kinder to let him go rather than let nature take its course if he is in pain

Milo has been put to sleep, he had given up and it was kinder to let him go, the vet said that ultimately he would starve to death and that his organs would shut down.

I am sorry for your loss. You have done the kindest thing for him though. Hugs

So sorry for your loss.
It’s such a difficult decision to make but it is the last gift of love we give our beloved piggies.
Be gentle with yourself as you grieve

Popcorn in the piggy heaven Milo❤ take care of urself

Thank you everyone for your kind words, it’s been a hard year, I have lost Milo and another one of my piggies Cooper as well as Kimi the gerbil, also my dad has suspected lung cancer so I’m a bit of a mess and struggling to cope.

I’m so sorry you had to let him go over the bridge, sending you hugs at this difficult time
Sleep tight little Milo 🌈

I am so sorry that you’ve had to help him over to the Rainbow Bridge. I think you’ve made the kindest decision for him. I know that doesn’t make his loss any easier to bear. Be gentle with yourself.
