Is melamine safe?

Thinking about using it to make some DIY tubes/hides.

If not that, what safe wood could I use?

The place I sometimes board my piggies uses it for all their cages, so I'm sure it's fine. You'll need to cover any 'raw' edges with the special tape they use otherwise it will get chewed or damaged by guinea pig wee!
