Hi, I'm just looking for some advice really as i have just noticed one of my guinea pigs poo is alot darker than usual. It is almost black in colour. He also seems very quiet and unlike himself. He is eating fine also I'm just worried incase there is something seriously wrong with him. I will take him to the vets tomorrow just dreading something happening over night

Hey Laura..brill idea!

My piggies say "swapsies"...

Hi Emmalouise,

I think the first thing to do when your piggies poos seem a little different to normal is to cut out the veg. Sometimes too much green veg like spring greens makes their poos a bit darker like this.

Make sure he has plenty of hay to eat and water to drink and keep an eye on it for a few days without veg. It should right itself then, if not it may be that the gut bacteria aren't balanced and he may need some probiotics to help him out.

Let us know how he's doing in a few days

I have given them some green beans today which they have never had before do you think this would have effected them?

Hi Emma......ooops sorry...posted last post on wrong thread....

OK darker pooos is not in itself a problem...but well done for noticing the changes.

Is he normally an outside pig?...or an indoor pig?
Has he had any changes in veggies recently? e.g. more spinach?

Is there anything else you can telll us about his current condition..you are obviously very observant....

My 7 piggies poos range from light to dark brown..and also from "wet" to "dry". Normally they are darker if they have been eating more brassicas/kale/spinach.......

Keep an eye on him and if there are any further changes come back and let us know

He usually lives in a hutch outside however because of the cold weather we have moved them inside. He seems alot more like himself today though and was fine when i picked him up. yesterday he ran into his house and didnt seem to want to come out so I'm pleased with that. He has also been making alot more noise than yesterday and is playing with him friend again.
