Hello everyone,

In the past few weeks my guinea pig Anton has changed and lost his appetite and will only eat a little bit of food at a time. Food does not really interest him anymore, and some food he does not even touch, like cucumber which he used to love. I just weight him and he weight around 1100 gram, but I feel like he has lost some weight. He used also to make a lot af noises, especially for food, which i does not anymore. He still loves hay and he still a little bit.
I have two guinea pig but they live seperately because they get agressive against each other. My other guinea pig Alfred is healthy and has big appetite.

I don't know what is wrong with Anton, maybe he is lonely or maybe I need to give him some new food or a new cage?
If anyone has an idea of that can be wrong or what maybe can help, please say something.

Love Alberte.

The most important thing you can do is to get him to a vet for a full health check including having his teeth checked. Any issues with the teeth such as spurs will cause food intake to drop which will become a serious problem very quickly.
Hay is the biggest part of his diet. Due to the fact it is hard to gauge exactly how much hay he is eating, the best thing to do is to weigh him daily at the same time each day and keep a record.
Loneliness, bored of the food he is being fed, are possibilities for his change in behaviour but these cannot be considered until any potential health issues are looked into first.

Yes a vet trip would be best. Watch how he eats his food, is he chewing strange, ganging or dropping little bits of food? This can be a sign of teeth spurs. I would weigh him daily too and record his weight. Hope he gets better soon x

Loss of appetite is usually one of two things. 1 - pain and the reaction to the pain. 2 - dental problems causing difficulty picking up and chewing food.

As you know he is not eating well on his own it is important that you step in with syringe feeding little and often, every couple of hours to keep his energy up and his guts working. A vet appointment as soon as possible would be wise
