I feel horrible! My boys got into the guinea pig cage today and took them out themselves. Now Yoshi's back leg is curled up underneath and floppy and he can't walk on it and it's looking pretty non functional. The upper leg is really swollen compared to his normal leg. He's still moving around quite well using his other legs and eating and drinking regularly but there is definitly somethingwrong with his back left leg. Is this something that can heal on it's own or do I have to take him to the vet? I feel so terrible! Has this ever happened to anyone else before?

i've never had this happen but i would personally take him to the vet. if he has something wrong he needs checking and most probably treatment. good luck with him - hope he is better soon

Thanks! I'm going to get him in somewhere tommorow. Poor little guy. :(

Take him to the vets. You cant tell what is going on inside his little leg and it must be hurting him. Good luck, keep us posted xx

vets asap, broken bones can lead to loss of circulation of blood and loss of leg,
and highly recommend putting a padlock on the cage to prevent further accidents.

I agree he needs to see a guine pig savvy vet - hope he is ok

i adopted my baby pascal because he had a broken leg. they said it was too late for the vet to set it, so it would have to heal on its own. he was totally fine, just walked with a limp... but even that is going away, now. he's always scurrying around and popcorning with no trouble.

hope he's alright <3

Please have him seen asap. He will be in a lot of pain!

Your pig needs some pain relief. He may have a fracture. He may also have just sprained/strained it. But without a physical exam by a vet and/or an xray then you cannot tell.

Let us know how you get on.

Obviously, the vet can't splint it, but can give anti inflammatories, pain killers and check that it is a simple fracture not a compound one that could cause an infection.

My boar had a possible broken leg and was treated as above, with the anti inflammatories being prescribed for an initial 14 days, reviewed by a further 7. After that he was able to put his paw down well, and made a good recovery.

In all honestly and I'm not having ago just giving you my thoughts, if your child hurt his/her leg and it was left dangling would you wait until the next day before you could take him/her the hospital? No.
This poor poor guinea pig will be in so much pain and does need to be seen via the vet asap, if money is an issue many vets WILL let you pay weekly :)
