Is There Anyone On The Forum With Type 1 Diabetes.

Hi there, I was wondering If there is anyone with type 1 diabetes on the forum who is struggling with their weight. It's my husband David who is diabetic and since we have been trying to lose weight his blood sugar levels have been all over the place. His is on four injections a day and I think it may help if he knows other folk are going through the same thing. Thank you.
 
My daughter is type 1, and was diagnosed at the age of 26 which is a little later than the norm, as most are diagnosed in childhood or their teens Hannah injects four times a day too. She was very ill in 2013 when she collapsed in her flat due to DKA. She was very lucky as her work colleagues raised the alarm and she was found just in time. She spent a week in intensive care and a further two weeks in hospital.

Hannah has always been very thin but when she was first diagnosed her weight had plummeted as her blood sugar was rising. When her diabetes is well controlled she does put a bit of weight on.

How long has your husband been diabetic for? There are some really good Facebook groups, where he would find a lot of support.

My boyfriend that I live with has type 1. He's quite thin but always has been. It's hard for him to gain weight but when his sugar is very controlled he'll gain a bit.

Hi, my hubby David was 31 when he was diagnosed, after two years of GP visits and tests they finally discovered he had diabetes. He is 6 feet 3 and at the time he weighed less than 10 stone he was like a walking skeleton. He is lucky that he has never had an incident like Hannah, that must have been truly awful for both of you, hopefully it will be a one off for her. David's problem is the opposite of Hannah's he is too fat, he is 52 now and weighs over 16 stone. We have now started to eat healthily, given up cakes, biscuits fatty food and alcohol but his blood sugar levels have been all over the place. There is no support up here from healthcare professionals as his long-term blood sugar level is not too bad, the specialist Diabetic nurse didn't want to see him again. He has never been offered a place on a DAFNE course, god knows where the nearest to us would be.
It's a sin the way adult diabetics are just left to get on with it themselves, as you know it's not an easy condition to live with, I have learned more from the Balance magazine than any doctor or specialist. Please give Hannah our best wishes and I hope she keeps putting on weight and stays fit and healthy. Jenny and David in the frozen north.

I don't think people realise just how serious it is.
