is this safe or foolhardy?

Oh my god did you see the last jump were she hit her foot? I really think that is very dangerous. Guinea pigs are not meant to jump and have such little legs. I hope she is okay and never hurts herself.

Well, Guinea pigs aren't very flexible. Their spines are much softer. I've had hamsters before, and my hamster would crawl upside down in his cage! :) Guinea pigs shouldn't even use balls or wheels like hamsters because their backs are so unflexible. So maybe after a while and lots of training it could hurt him. Of course, I'm sorta new to guinea pigs. So don't take my advice to seriously. :)) But the thing about their backs is true. :)

dunno found it on youtube not my video just wondering how best to exersise rocky fatpig

I'm teaching my piggies lots of things, i really cannot see it being a problem. They wouldnt jump if it hurt them. People will probably dispute me though.

x.

Personally I would prefer it if people didn't put videos such as this on youtube as I think it could encourage some people to put their guineas at risk trying out "stunts". However, I am unsure about this particular video as it does seem like the pig is choosing to jump - it could just stop or run around it? I do wonder what is happening off camera though.

I dont think you should push them to do that exactly but that piggie seemed to like jumping seeing how wide they can jump serves to benefit to the piggy tho

Pretty amazing! :D
This time it's all right andthe pig wouldn't jump if it didn't want to :) I do agree that it might encourage the wrong people to try this

I think in the wild they would jump somewhat but not much more than the first distance so overall I don't think its a good idea, as already mentioned, their backs aren't very flexible and i think this could be an accident waiting to happen :...

Did you mean to say that seeing how wide they can jump serves NO benefit to the piggy? If so, then that's exactly what I thought when I saw that vid :)

If I discovered by chance, during the normal course of piggy life, that one of mine could jump (i.e. did it spontaneously and unprompted) and enjoyed it, then fair enough - I'd be interested to see it but wouldn't then 'challenge' the piggy by setting out stunts of increasing distances (and danger!) It does worry me that some people don't know when to stop. Will they just keep going until the pig is hurt?

Bearing in mind how many guinea pigs suffer leg fractures/breaks from jumping off cage ramps from quite a low height (there was one on here the just other day) I don't think this kind of thing is a good idea at all. I guess if a piggy wants to jump then you can't necessarily stop it but I think you should do what you can to limit how high/far they can jump and you shouldn't go out of your way to encourage it. (I bet that piggy in the video got some kind of reward for performing.)

I don't think guinea pigs should really be taught any kind of trick/stunt. What's wrong with watching a good old fashioned popcorn or piggy lap?! It's just as well that I don't bother posting on youtube as my pigs just do all the normal piggy things and would be deemed boring!
