I can't tell whether this is blood in my boys wee or just stained wee from eating peppers and carrots. What do you think? My boys did have half a carrot between them as a treat yesterday and the day before (I rarely give carrot now just every couple to few of months due to the high vitamin A) and they have also had a slice or red/orange pepper with their veggies as I ran out of green peppers. They've also had some ready grass lately again as a treat, a small handful in the morning between the two of them, (I never normally buy ready grass, just got given a small bag from a friend so I've let them have some) and they are on Burgess Excel pellets until I can switch over to Vitakraft for the IC diet. - which should be soon hopefully :D

I just noticed that Paddy was a bit puffy looking yesterday and Rohan slightly too, but it was cold in the kitchen so I didn't know whether they were just cold, or whether they were in pain when passing urine. Their wee normally drys brownish in colour, but these past couple of days they've had some calcium deposits and possible bladder sludge in their urine, (I couldn't tell whether it was gritty or not) and their wee has had reddish patches in it so I am quite worried.

I've put fresh puppy pads down so I'm going to see whether any more red patches appear. Should I do anything else? I can't be sure that it is blood, and if it is blood then I don't know whose it is. Any advice is appreciated. @Wiebke

Maybe worth doing the tupperware trick just to check https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/how-to-collect-a-urine-sample.97156/

I don't suppose you know who has produced the wee?

I think it might be Paddy as he was in the hut this morning that had that pad underneath it, but I cannot be sure as Rohan sometimes turfs him out of his bed and sleeps in it. I'm not sure I'd feel confident at this stage syringing water to them as I'm still learning to handle them. I just cleaned their grease glands as best as I could, but that was an ordeal, they are so wriggly and get so stressed I feel awful. XD

I understand that, you could feed them cucumber? That will get the bladders going or overally wet veg?

I've figured out what it is, it's colouring/dye from the new tiki huts. XD I was poo picking the boys before and noticed that there was a poo stuck to the bottom of one of the tiki huts, so I got a damp cage cleaning wipe and wiped the bottom of the tiki hut, and a load of red dye/colouring came off onto the wipe, which is the same colour as the red stains on the puppy pads. Also if you look carefully you'll notice that the stains on the puppy pads are in a sort of semi circle shape which is the shape of the back of the tiki huts. So from what I can work out the boys are going into their hut and weeing on the puppy pads, then the urine must be running underneath the edges of the tiki hut, which is then leaving a red imprint on the puppy pads. Phew thank God, panick over. :P

Thanks for the advice though, I'll bear it in mind just in case it ever happens in the future. Hopefully not though.

Yay! Good news, those Tiki huts do look cool, your little ones are very lucky to have such a caring Mum. I like Health & Illness threads like this one. Good stuff. x

Yes thank god it wasn't blood. I'm always worrying about my boys, guess that's all part of being a piggy mum. They always come running out to me wheeking now when I come home from work, waiting for their pellets and veggies, hehee. And they seem to have gotten used to the sounds of my wheelchair to as they don't run off any more when I go past the cage in it. Id be devastated if anything happened to them that I could prevent. :D

Thanks again though :)

You never stop worrying, but it is always good to be on the ball and a releif when things pan out this way :)

It's amazing how quick they get used to things isn't it. Be lovely to see some more photos of them in the photos section (hint, hint)
