Very puzzled by this today - found what looked like a solid mass of glue attached to piggy's fur. I panicked as I thought it may be a wound of some sort (and I'm a bit paranoid about fly strike at the moment as there are so many flies around) but then I remembered reading a thread on here about boar glue - can anyone tell me if this is what it is please?! If so, do I need to wash it or cut it out (very matted fur). If not, what on earth is it?! Piggy seems happy in himself and looks fine everywhere else. Many thanks :)

If you can't see any wounds and it isn't pus which smells really bad then it's more than likely boar glue.

If it is matted in his fur, you may need to gently cut it out x

Thanks @Claire W - that's reassuring - panicked when I first saw it as thought is was something dreadful! Although I'm not looking forward to having to cut it out!:vom:

Boars heh. You could try washing it out but I'd of thought cutting will be easier if it's matted.

Good luck!

Good luck trying to wash it out! In my experience it dries very much like superglue so water and soap does nothing to soften it.

I usually try to cut it out but if it's gotten too close to the skin I tend to leave it for a little while to grow out. If it annoys your pig then he's remove it himself.

Has he done it to himself or has he cagemate?

When I realised it wasn't a wound I honestly thought that superglue must have got into the cage somehow and was wondering how on earth it could have happened! Yes, he does have another boar in with him - who I have now discovered also has some matted fur on his tummy - so the mystery seems to have been solved - eughh! I've had them nearly a year and have never noticed this before! It is such a lovely warm day here I may give them both a bath later to see if that helps :)

The joys of boars eh?! But I wouldn't change them for the world.

I used to have one boar that would get it on his face. A few times he'd have some stuck on his lip or nose. Dirty boy, haha!

There's no glamour in males! I realised that when recently extracting all sorts of foul debris from my boys' private areas!

Boyfriend was shouting me like a crazed man earlier. I went dashing to see what was wrong and he informed me that Podrick had "let off his stench of burned rubber" when he picked him up for a hug.

I told him it was a defence mechanism, like Pepe le pew.

He does have a ripe smell though, when he's rumbling and flapping his bum he could easily clear a room.

Do they still produce it if they are neutered?

I've never seen any on Colin!

I never noticed it with my first two neutered boars after their surgery and they never humped the sows they were with. My neutered boar Treacle though is a happy humper and Ruggles gets a smattering sometimes.

Well I have tried to cut it out but it just isn't going to work - it is too close to his skin and I'm nervous about accidentally catching him with the scissors. It doesn't seem to be bothering him so I think I am just going to have to see if it grows out! On the plus side, the boys aren't too stinky (yet!) - either that or I'm nose blind!
