Hello there! :)

If i am allowed getting two piggies (I left a note for my mom friday night before i went away to my cottage with my dad asking if i can get piggies) and REALLY want to make them happy! So i joined this forum, and others to learn from your experiences and thoughts :)

I got offered this cage (not exact one, but same brand, and style) for only $25 CAD! O0 Thats soooo cheap! Plus they said they will throw in a igloo, water bottle, food bowl, and bathroom corner...

The dimensions are 40" long, by 21" wide, by 18" tall. My plan is to make a second level (about 1/3- 1/4 the length of the cage) out of plywood, with nespaper on top, and a well gripped wooden ramp to lead up to it. I plan on putting 2 food bowls on it, one for fresh vegies, and one for the pellet food(s). I will also put a cozy on the one side of the level. Trust me, all these things fit on it, with plenty of room (I experimented lol)...

Then, on the bottom of the cage, i plan on putting newspaper down, then a layer of kiln dried pine shavings. I will put a water bottle hanging on the side of the cage in on area, a cardboard box house (I already made it :P ) in one corner, and i will put timothy hay on the floor in one area. Maybe half the cage or under the second level? That way they can have a lot of romping room to run around, a chewable cheap house to hide in, and fresh water to drink. Then with a simple walk up a safe ramp, they will find a nice warm cozy cup bed, fresh vegies, and pellets :D

Does this sound good for them guys? I really hope i am allowed to get guinea pigs very badly! I have wanted them for ages, and have done my homework as i hope you can see... lol. I will know if i can get them or not tomorrow (sunday June 3rd) night :embarassed: I'm soooo nervous! LOL

Petguy :)

Sounds brilliant, however, I think they will need a slightly bigger cage. Have you looked at C + C cages, I think these would be ideal for what you want to do. Hope this has helped and welcome to the forum. O0

haha thanks so much :) I thought it would be awesome too! lol

I thought of doing that (a C&C cage) but i have a rambuncious 2 year old shetland sheepdog, and a cat... The dog sleeps in my room, and gets hyper a lot. So even with a lid to the c&c cage, he would probably jump in it, or cave it in :( Plus... i dont have any furniture big enough to put a C&C cage on either :( So, for these reasons are why i don't want to use, or can't use, a C&C cage :(

Thanks again, and i hope to see you around! ;)

Petguy ;0

Hey guys :)

Here is the exact cage the person will sell me... It looks in great condition (other than the newspaper marks on the floor)... What do you think?

Welcome to the forum :)

I think it would suite one, but with pigloo and toys, maybe not two comfortably.

You're doing right in finding out things first though O0

Is that cage got the same dimensions as the ones you mentioned in your first post?

If say so I think two guineas may get a bit cramped if you have too many toys in there. It also depends on how much floor time they are going to get.

Like kelly has said it is great your doing all your research first O0

yes i agree, with everything in the cage there won't be enough room for two piggies.

Thanks both of you :) So far I'm lovin' the forum! :D haha And yes, I would rather learn now rather than later... As guinea pigs are living things and need proper care :smitten: haha

I know some people who have this cage for two... and they are fine in it. It may be a bit cramped, but it would work. Plus mine would have more floor space as food and vegies will be on a different level leaving more running room on the floor :P The cozy would also be on the second level :) On the floor it would be a cardboard box in one corner, then the rest of the floor is empty to run. Then one corner will have hay in it to sleep, eat, and play O0 And yes they will get a lot of free runnign time out of the cage. I'd guinea-proof my bedroom for them, which is 10' x 14' feet... with a lot of free room in it ;D lol

Petguy :) -Thanks again guys

I also don't think that the cage is big enough for two guineas even if you do have lots of things on their second level. Is there any way you can look into getting a bigger cage. If you don't furniture to rest a C&C on then you can build a stand for it out of grids. Thats what I'm planning on doing with mine eventually. Have a good look at cavy cages they have loads of photos in the gallerys and instrucions on how to make stands on their forum

you have to remember that adding a second level takes up room for the bottom floor space though as the can't go under the very small bits of the ramps.

Welcome to the forum O0
I do agree with the others that it would be too small for 2 piggies, they love to run. seriously, mine do laps round the room!
My two boys are in a 5 foot x 2 foot c + c cage. Have you heard of the nero cages? They look similar to the one in your pic but the nero 4 is very very big. Maybe you could save up as you will see how much bigger it is? I am sure you can get 2nd hand ones, possibly on ebay?
Well done for asking first and finding out all about guineas before you get some O0

Oh ps, do some research on pine scented woodshavings. They are definately NOT recommended as bedding as can cause upper respitory infections and dries out their skin causing fungal infections and sore feet.

Where abouts are you? I may have a nero 4 that I don't ned anymore as my piggies have a new hutch?

Agree, pine woodshavings are not good for guineas and have been know to cause problems. :)

Hey, Thanks everyone for your replies :D lol

The stand made out of those C&C cubes are too flimsy for my dog i know it :( I have thoguht about it, and am super jelious becuase i looked through all the pages of C&C cage piccies! LOL. Sooo awesome!

The ramp would be only 4" wide so it wouldn't take up a lot of room at all... The one food bowl alone is 5" across, so is the other. So that alone is 10" sqaured of room taken up, PLUS the cozy cup would also need to be on the floor... So the second level saves a lot ;)

I'm in Guelph Ontario Canada, and I will look for a 'nero' cage... lol Does anyone know where they are sold near me?

Kiln dreid pine is safe...all the oils are extracted ;) Normal pine is bad, yes :( But kiln dried is safe

Thanks again,

Petguy :)

I don't know of any stockists in Canada as I am in England, but maybe there is a cage similar to the Nero 4, in some large pet shops you have over there?

http://www.petsathome.com/invt/16909 that is the nero four so you have an idea to what you are looking for O0

Theres a cage on cavy cages that can hold the weight of a 200lb woman, she climbs in to clean it and it has a base made of grids. If you use the conectors as well as thick cable ties it makes them very stable and secure.
It seems you have made up your mind about this cage no matter what the opinions are that you asked for.

The minimum recommended size for 2 pigs is 30" by 36" for the base. Bear in mind that the dimensions you have are the outer dimensions of the cage and the usable space in the cage will have dimensions at least an inch less in length and width. That leaves you with 39" by 20" which is too small. Take away the space needed for a ramp to your second level and your total floor space is way too small for 2 pigs!

I am listening to the opinions, which is why I'm asking the question 98)

I never knew that they were that sturdy, that is good to know. I guess i could try. I really wanted to make a C&C cage, i made up my mind the other day i want to make a 4x2 or a 3x2 at least for them... But i realised i had no where to put it. They look cool to me, and i really want to make some. I could figure it out... somehow

What cage is 30" x 36" for 2 pigs? I have maybe seen one of those dimensions... Do you have pictures of your cages i can see? As they must be 36" x 30" for two ;) And I don't undertsand why you think the area a ramp takes up so much space? It's 4" wide by .5" thick... Plus it will be in the coner where they wouldn't be able to run anyways?

Whoa those cages are sweet! Sadly I've never seen them here :( lol. Thanks anyways, but what are the dimensions?

Petguy

guinea pigs like to do full laps so they would run in the corners :) c+c cages are the best way to go if you can't find a suitable one to buy :)

My cage
SP_A0028.jpg

30" by 36" is 2x3 grids. I have 2 boars in one side of this cage and 1 in the other, he's waiting for a friend. In a month or so I'm going to be extending it to a 2x4 grid cage for each pair. If you look at the ramp it takes up about 1 grid length by a half a grid length of floor space that they can no longer use as a run and 2 of my pigs do run laps round the cage, the other is way too lazy for that kind of energetic behaviour.

I don't think you can find a pet store cage with these dimensions, I think the nero 4 comes close but I have no idea about cages in America. Sorry.

Hi Petguy

You really should buy the biggest cage you can afford. Everyone loves a bargain, but if $25 is all you can afford for a cage, then you really shouldn't be keeping pets.
So if you can afford more, which I guess you probably can, then you should. There are lots and lots of indoor cages on the market which are suitable for 2 pigs, and as already suggested, a C&C cage is an option - they are more sturdy then you think, just build a lid and train your dog not to go too near.

And even though you ae asking everyones opinion, I really don't think you are taking it in. You keep coming up with excuses why it will work out, so maybe you will go ahead and buy it anyway.

Thats a a sweet cage. I'm very jelious O0 lol

I can afford big cages, thats not the issue though lol. I have ot think what will work, and what will not. I don't want to go ahead and barge right in and get something that will not work. I now think a C&C cage will work, so i am looking into those options ;D

I want to get a peice of plywood, the same (if not a little bit bigger) dimensions as the base of the coroplast (which will be the cage bottom), place it on a table I have thats roughly 3 feet tall (so out of my dogs reach) then make the C&C cage, and place it on top of that plywood. Do you think this will be secure enough? I want to make the cage at LEAST 3' x 2'... ;D maybe 4' x 2' if my mom lets me lol. ?

Today is the day i go home and find out if I'm allowed getting piggies or not?!?! I'm soooo nervous! :embarassed:

Just a though if you can buy mesh and wood batons from a DIY store you can build one yourself. My dads going to build me one £10 for mesh and about £20 for batons and then around £20-30 for lino to cover floors, pretty cheap comared to shop cages O0

I was given one of those cages yesterday. It certainly isn't big enough for a permanent home although it will probably be useful as a hospital cage, or the tray will do a group of rabbits in a shed as a litter tray.

A pair of guineas need at least a 4ft by 2ft cage/hutch with an attached run of 4ft square.
