Hi,
Could anyone tell me what this is please?

I was thinking maybe fungal?

It didn’t notice this but she’s scratched herself and made herself bleed as I was holding her just now so touching it must be irritating . They’re my newest pigs, have only had them a few weeks

Her and her cagemate are ivermectin treated

Only a vet can say for sure, it could be ringworm which is fungal, it could be mites if the ivermectin treatment was too low a dose or too few doses, it could be barbering by herself or a friend if they are stressed... please ask a vet!

Does it look like barbering so I know whether to separate until I can get to a vet?

I wouldn’t put them through the stress of separating to be honest as they will both need treating anyway depending on what it is. I’ve only ever dealt with fungal once and my vet advised me to keep them altogether to avoid the stress. Thankfully the other 3 didn’t get it. It’s hard to tell whether it’s barbering but you don’t need to separate even if it is

It looks more like mange mites to me. Did they have spot on ivermectin? They probably need injections given by the vet. Barbering doesn't cause bleeding only hair trimming. I would pop them to the vets tomorrow morning

The bleeding is from her biting and scratching herself when I was examining her as it was obviously itchy/uncomfortable

Could it be a bite? Hard to tell from the picture but you’re probably best getting a vet check.

Only a vet can diagnose what the problem is. I go by the rule if in doubt ....... vet.

Only a hands on examination by a vet can tell you for sure! But the skin looks sore and inflamed- which might suggest mange or ringworm- nobody can diagnose just from pictures though, not even a vet- we're only best-guessing and whatever it is will probably need prescription treatment.

We just got a new piggy with unexpected ringworm last week so I really do sympathise! Gloves and F10 disinfectant and everything else the very good forum guides recommend. We were told our new piggy was perfectly healthy but she had a big sore bald patch under her long neck fur when we first met her. Always best to get new piggies vet checked to be sure especially if they have bald patches!

I bought her from a breeder listed on the British cavy council website so naively assumed they’d both be in good shape (I’ve had guinea pigs my whole life and rarely had any problems other than ovarian cysts). Having just contacted them, they’ve had to keep a few piggies back to treat for ringworm in the last week or two so it looks like it could be ringworm.

I’ve examined her whole body and she has maybe 3/4 patches, some with scabs, which may be due to her biting herself which she’s been doing whilst I was holding her.

I swear she wasn’t like this yesterday as I cut the hair around her bum and checked her over. Can’t believe it could spread this quickly. I’m worried what the vet will think tomorrow :( it looks awful and neglectful.

I will be ringing when they open for an appointment as the online booking system isn’t working.

I’ve attached pics of the other two areas. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable?

The vet will think you're a very caring owner taking your piggies to the vet. Not everyone does cos their "only guinea pigs"

Don’t worry. I once adopted a 3 week old baby. The lady did advise that her mum had fungal so it could have been passed on but I took her anyway. She did develop fungal in which I took her to the vet for but my vet was very kind and helpful and gave me the correct treatment and advise

Do you have any estimate of the price it will be?
I’m a student but do have a contingency fund for if they were to get ill (a few hundred) which I’m hoping will cover it.
I’m guessing I’d be looking at consultation fee, skin scrape?, medication and possible follow up consultation?

Really varies with postcode as we were discussing on the forum earlier this week... but last thursday we paid £42 for consulation plus a week of ringworm treatment, and we plan to pay about the same next week for a check-up and another round of the same or different treatment if its working or not, then hopefully a £21 all clear check up if all goes well in another week or two. So maybe estimate about £100, £120? If its ringworm, on one pig, in the Northwest of England. Southern England seems much more expensive...

That’s not too bad then, I have boars at home who are both healthy at 6 years old (in the north).. had these sows a few weeks and we’ve already got this to contend with and I go uni in (you guessed it) the south.

Sorry about awful typing, my phone is playing up

Hi! Please have your girls vet checked for mange or hay mites or ringworm. They can all start looking pretty similar in the very early stages. If you treat on spec with low dosed shop products, you can only temporarily suppress but not heal a problem. It is in the end cheaper to see a vet promptly.
More information about skin parasites and fungal in this guide here: What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)

All the best!

Please let us know how you get on at the vets. Poor girl must be very uncomfortable. Be sure to complain to the breeder, too.

Hi,
Just finished scrubbing their whole cage. Turns out it is mites! But not the common type, the vet didn’t recognise them.
They’re going back in 2 weeks (and then again 2 weeks later), so far it has cost me upwards of £150 but it’ll be worth it if they’re comfortable again.

Apparently it is not something I could’ve prevented or caused and it may reoccur. The only annoying thing is, I could’ve got Xeno from pets at home or somewhere.

Well at least you have a proper diagnosis now, and the correct treatment! Hope your piggies get well soon, I found out last week that F10 do an insecticidal version of their disinfectant spray that might be worth investing in for the cage cleans?

That's the one! These poorly piggies are expensive aren't they, we've bought F10 disinfecting hand gel, antifungal laundry detergent, antifungal shower gel, and a big pack of critical care feed and syringes this week as well as paying the vet bills, all because of new little ringworm infected piggy Blodwen!

I’ll invest in that then I think!

They are indeed expensive ☹️

Hi, did the vet prescribe the Xeno spot on? It works well and you can get a pack of 6 on Amazon (it sounds like they’ve charged you for this which is usually double) last time I bought it, it was £20. It works really well and I noticed a difference in my piggies within a day (they had lice). Did the vet say why they wanted to see your piggy again?

Yep, it was Xeno which cost nearly £100! I knew it was available other places and had even considered buying it the day before.

They want to check her wounds (from biting herself) are healing okay and that the mite treatment is working. They also need 2 more applications.

Also, thank you!

Got some awful news she’s made her skin so sore. Is there anything I can do? Does she need an emergency vet?

I’m devastated. I don’t want her to be in pain, can I bandage or anything? I have leucillin?

You can apply the spot on stuff yourself though? That way it would be cheaper for you. There’s two different strengths the Xeno 50 or Xeno 450, the dosage depends on their weight. The last time I went to the vets I bought 1 dose each for my boys then ordered the rest off amazon.
