Lolly
Junior Guinea Pig
We have had our boars for 7 weeks now so they are about 17/18 weeks old and I have been weighing them every week.
When we got them, Rosie was 503g and was 794g at last weigh in. Patch was 613g and 903g which means they have both gained 41g a week on average. There was 110g between them when we got them and 109g on Sunday - they must be sharing food very nicely!
Does this sound normal weight gain and how long are they likely to carry on like this? I'm going to have to reinforce the hutch with steel girders if they keep this up
. I think it's fair to say they will be big boys!
I'm trying not to overfeed them, they get 30g of pellets each in 2 bowls in the morning and I top the bowls up with no more than half that if the bowls are empty at night time (although they spill as much as they eat most days). I've read that they can have more pellets while they are young and growing so I plan to give them less pellets when they eventually slow down. They get veggies twice a day, cuc/pepper and celery or carrot (5 days celery, 2 days carrot) in the morning and leafy stuff in the evening. They are bedded on plenty of meadow hay and get their veggie bowl stuffed with timothy hay once that's empty morning and night.
