Hands up - who cried?

I bawled my eyes out for about ten minutes.

It had to be done though I reckon. If anyone didnt see it - the dog was PTS as he was a biter (after lots of attempts to train him)
It was very sad.

I saw it and unfortunately so did my 6 year old son, I missed the beginning which apparently warned of an emotional ending or I wouldn't have let him watch. It did have to be done as the dog had really mauled the daugher but did they need to show the dog happily walking into the vets wagging his tail and then the man burying it in the garden? I had one very distressed little boy to deal with afterwards :'(

I missed the warning too.

I'm sorry that your boy was so upset. Is he ok now?

I think the garden bit was a bit uneccesary too

I actually sobbed! It was all a bit too much information really eh? I had to have a big hug with Pookie my old piggy afterwards much to his disgust - tears everywhere!

I think it was important to show the other side of dog ownership - but i cant help thinking that this poor doggy was just brought up all wrong :'(

Its not always good to spoil animals

I just caught the ending. V sad :'(

They shouldn't have shown him going to the vets. I was worried they were going to show him actually being PTS!

Oh lord I haven't seen this yet. I've got it taped. I don't think I should see it now. Thanks for the warning.

I totally agree with you! I may sound cruel but I believe that the family were the worst enemies to those poor dogs. The dogs didn't know where they stood and it was awful to watch. They effectively signed the death warrant of that dog.

I have studied dog behaviour / psychology and dog training, and they basically trained that dog into that behaviour .... in a better home, my feelings are that he would still be alive. People should need training before being allowed to have a dog >:(

Voila

I dont think people realise that doggies are not like cats and piggers etc They need socialising and training otherwise they pick up bad behaviour.

Agreed that people should have to be trained first

Debs! dont watch it love - its too sad

Its ALWAYS the owners fault much the same as parents and children really and if you watch Victoria Stillwell her methods are not dissimilar to Supernanny Naughty mat v naughty step?! All principles of discipline are the same whether its human or animal you have to show respect and trust to gain it.

When owners / parents start complaining that their child / dog is out of control its because THEY haven't instilled correct discipline from day 1.

Thats my take on it anyway I'm sure many will disagree............

Its always the dog that gets the bad treatment when its the owners that have made it like that. Any animal behaviour therapist will tell you that in a 1½ hour session, they would spend ½ hour training the dog and 1 hour training the owners.
I get so upset that all it takes is for the owners to understand life from a dogs perspective and then they will see where they're going wrong and why the dog is behaving like that. It's an animal. Its not capable of maliciuos thoughts. It acts purely on instinct and the saddest thing of all is that all a dog wants to do is please you. If training and rules are not consistant how can it know how to? :(
Thanks for the warning about the prog. Hubby deleted it for me so I wouldn't watch it by mistake after I told him about this thread.

Chinakit (sorry I don't know your name :-[) have you studied animal behaviour through a college course? I would so love to do that.

I would say it is definitely always the owners/parents fault when it comes to animals/children. It makes me so angry when you hear of a dog being put down because of biting - surely it's been taught to do that? Or maybe not taught, but not told not too. It's like the whole Rottweiler/Doberman issue - I've had a Rottweiler and knew someone who had a Doberman in South Africa, now the Rottweiler was a huge softie - and she was supposed to be our guard dog! But, unfortunately, the person that brought her up before we took her used to beat her up and let her dogs attack her (we took two dogs, the other is a rhodesian ridgeback and also a big softie). The Doberman, same, the most timid creature ever that the owner actually took him to classes to try and get some spirit into him as he was worried about the dog being hurt if he was ever broken into. Obviously these are only two cases but a dog is very persuasive/trainable and will do anything it's owner tells it. These poor dogs are being put down due to the owners being at fault.

If you think about it, we have to have learn to drive and take a test to get a licence, maybe something similar should be brought about re dogs/animals. Admittedly I hate tests(!) but if this stopped unsuitable owners......

I said this before on another link All dogs owners should pay a licence same price as a TV (dogs are more entertaining than TV anyway LOL!) then only those that really want them would pay.

There used to be a licence for dogs, it was 37.5p before it was scrapped - i still have one somewhere (kept it as a memento when we had to have our dog pts because of kidney failure at the age of 12 - miss her still :'()

And i missed the show but having read what i have, i'm glad i did. I do, however, totally agree with it being the owners fault

I have 2 dogs, and I admit that I do spoil them. However they both know the boundaries they are NOT allowed to cross. For example they are not allowed to jump all over me when I am eating, and they know it. They are not allowed to steal food, and even if I leave my dinner on the settee while I pop into the kitchen, they won't touch it.

You don't have to be mega strict with dogs ... they just have to know where they stand, ie that you are the boss, and they must have a certain amount of good manners. It's not rocket science, and it does amaze me that some people refuse to train their dogs at all, yet get surprised and upset when the dogs don't behave.

My mum was a dog groomer and I have seen her calm down a nervous dog or a badly behaved dog just by barking a short sharp bark. Its how their mothers tell them off when they are puppies. It was like magic.
She also let all five of her dogs sleep on her bed but only after she had been in all of their beds first so that they knew she was top dog and it was a priveledge(sp) to sleep on the bed not a right.
All it takes is to understand them and you're halfway there.

I totally agree with you there Deb & am ;D at the vision of your mum diving into their beds. Mine sleep on the bed but they know if i say "go get on your bed" i mean it & they do. :)

I let my dogs sleep on my bed too, although Skye prefers to sleep on the floor at the bottom of the bed (ideal for tripping me up in the night if I need the loo ? ). I don't think this leads to problems as long as the dogs know where they stand and will get off the bed when you ask them to.
