I've decided that I'm going to go ahead and get Cameo spayed :...

I feel that the risks outweigh the benefits, and after much thought, I'm booking her in for tomorrow hopefully (I just need to find out which vets are operating, as I want a specific one to do it!).

I'm nervous, but I think it's the best thing for her long term health.

I'm glad you've reached a decision! :)
It's a hard one to make!
What are her problems? If it will help her,, then you are doing the right thing!

Marble is going to be spayed on Thursday. I know how you feel as I am worried too. I wish her all the best.

Hope the Spaying goes well for both Cameo and Marble, hope both your girls recover quickly x x

Wishing both Cameo and Marble a successful op and a speedy recovery. Fingers and paws crossed here xx

Hi

I feel sick and my stomach is churning.

Fingers crossed and thoughts are with you x

She has no problems. I don't have the statistics to hand but the risks of not spaying are huge. My vets are contemplating recommending it as routine, like cats and dogs. I'll speak to the vet and get the articles. I'm very pro spay/castrate!

Well, we're all ready fir tomorrow! I've bought all cameo's favourite foods, I've converted the large kennel in the exotics ward so that jeff can keep her company but they're separated, just got to remember to take her to work with me in the morning!

Hi Amanda
Hope all goes well with cameo - as you are in my neck of the woods (I'm in Malmesbury - junction 17 m4 ) can you let me know what vets you use please - need a good cavvy savvy vet and a link /bit more about the article - as would be interesting to read - after all ,Rugby Rabbit & GP rescue routinely spay their females.

xx

There's a few good options in the Bristol area - there's Highcroft or Row, or Great Western Referrals in Swindon, they all have exotics specialists - I'll pm you where I go, as it's also where I work!

Fankoo!

I've decided to hospitalise her at the vets over the weekend - seeing as I'm there for 12 hours tomorrow, 10 hours on saturday and who knows how many hours on sunday!

She's under the knife!

Vet has found a lump, not sure if it's a hernia or tumour, so will discuss with the vet and proceed accordingly!

How is cameo doing - what was the lump -

Hi all!

Cameo's surgery took longer than anyone would have liked - she was on the table for an hour start to finish - few complications, firstly the mysterious lump, secondly her tissues were very friable (very fragile and disintegratey) so the vet had to be super careful. One of her uterine horns came apart in the vets hand, and one of her ovaries literally fell apart, so he had to be really careful but make sure he removed all the ovarian tissue, without digging around :{

She came out of theatre at 2pm, was very cold and very sleepy. She was popped into her basket with lots of heat pads and blankets, and we checked on her every 10 minutes. At around 4 her temperature was back up to normal, but she was still far too sleepy to be left unattended, so she stayed in her basket while we monitored her. At 6pm she was still really sleepy, still not even lifting her head up, so we put her in the kennel with Jeff in the hope that it might perk her up a little.

I finished work at 7pm, and decided that 5 hours without eating was more than enough, and she was awake enough to be syringe fed without choking. Luckily, she decided a mixture of critical care, apple and banana baby food and vitamin C was just what the doctor (or vet!) ordered, and she took it quite well. I managed to get 5mls of critical care and 1ml of water in her. She still wasn't lifting her head at this point, but was taking the food better than I expected. She also had another shot of opoid pain relief at 8pm before I left. She went back in the kennel with Jeff (there's a divide between them!) with a newly microwaved heat pad and she seemed much brighter after having eaten.

She still wasn't lifting her head when I left, but was more alert. The night nurse is going to monitor her for poos and wees, and feed her every 2 hours, unless she starts eating for herself. All in all, she's doing well!

I took a few photos during her recovery, not many people get to see a guinea pig straight after her anaesthetic, so you may be shocked at just how sleepy she is - dogs and cats wake up quite quickly, pigs don't!

About to have her temperature taken (again!) - very sleepy, very flat - she looked dead!

I'm working on the theory that no news is good news, so I probably won't hear anything until tomorrow morning. I'm going in early at 7am to give her a good feed and see how she is, so I'll update then!

Edit: The lump may either be a skin tumour or the result of an umbilical hernia, but Claire who I got Cameo from, myself, and the two vets that have seen Cameo have never noticed this before, so it's being sent off to the exotics pathologists for analysis

Will do!

I felt bad for putting her through it voluntarily - but I don't regret the decision. It's the best thing for her long term! Huge difference between the recovery after a spay than a castration - Jeff was up, running around and eating within the hour!

Those pictures are heart-breaking 8... - but as you say medically/long term being spayed was the best option...

Sending loads of hugs and kisses her way x>>xx>>>xx>>>

So glad everything is going o.k for you.

HEALING AND LOVING VIBES FOR CAMEO XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yes the anaes knocks them out ...... i used to be handed our boy straight after his toofie trims (in OZ they give them gas) so i know how cold they are.... i used to offer tiny bits of canteloupe and watermelon which were easy to digest and wet.

I'm so glad that I have the ability to keep her at the vets, she's staying there until Sunday night as I'm at work more than I'm at home at the moment. There's no way I'd have taken her home even 6 hours after she woke up with how she was, and I know what I'm doing!

She had round the clock care, feeds every 2 hours, and I got to sleep :))

I'll update when I get to work!

Not much improvement...shes more awake but reluctant to move. She's due pain relief any tine now so hopefully that'll help. Shes still being syringe fed, she's taking it well, her chart says she ate 20mls at 4am!
